Data Scientists responsibility ensuring technologies are used positively

What responsibility do Data Scientists have for ensuring that technologies are used positively and not distorted to negatively reshape society?
As a group, construct an argument that explores whether the problem is with the technology or the human who is designing/implementing/using the technology? That is if a technology is agnostic what processes distort it?
Describe how a seemingly ‘objective’ technology can reinforce racism, sexism, or other forms of inequality. Each group should have one example to support the description.
How do systems make “users” complicit in the politics of exploitation and oppression?

Cancer in the United States

The American Academy of Dermatology (2021) states that skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Protecting our skin from harmful ultraviolet rays is imperative. However, the human body does benefit from a mild to moderate amount of UV radiation.
Initial post: What is the best way to protect your skin from sun-related damage? What are the advantages and disadvantages to sunscreens containing common active ingredients such as oxybenzone, octocrylene, and homosalate? Are there benefits to using mineral sunscreens, such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide? How effective are natural sunscreens, such as coconut oil or shea butter? If a sunscreen product is not regulated by the FDA, how can you determine if the product’s claims are true?

Antibiotic Resistance

For many years, antibiotics have been effectively used to treat bacterial disease.
A growing concern for treating bacterial diseases is the evolution of antibiotic resistance by bacterial populations. Resistance means that a particular antibiotic is no longer effective in treating a disease. This resistance can be viewed as evolution of a new trait at the population level, which is resistance to an antibiotic.
Focus your discussion on 1 of the following topics:
• The use, overuse, and abuse of antibiotics are accredited with creating antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. Explain how this relates to natural selection. • Using a credible source, describe at least 2 of the things that people do (you can include individuals, doctors, health care professionals, hospitals, farmers, and so on) that contribute to this problem. Explain. • Are there things that you can personally do to reduce your risk or even to reduce the spread of these dangerous microbes?

Concept of structured healthcare terminologies

You are a department manager at Happy Valley Medical Center. Over lunch one day several colleagues are discussing the new electronic health record (EHR). It’s obvious that there are mixed feelings about the EHR. One complaint is that there seems to be too many ways to enter the same information. Everyone at HVMC knows that you are an expert in healthcare terminologies
-In your post to this discussion, explain the concept of structured healthcare terminologies to your colleagues and describe how healthcare terminologies support optimal use of EHRs.
