Data analytics and statistics

Respond to the following:
How is data analytics different from statistics?
Analytics tools fall into 3 categories: descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive. What are the main differences among these categories?
Explain how businesses use analytics to convert raw operational data into actionable information. Provide at least 1 example.
Consider your role in the organization you work for (or another organization you’re familiar with). How is data analytics important to your job and your organization? If it is not, how could you and the organization use data analytics to improve performance?

Research questions

Describe the evaluative criteria (indicators or variables) to be addressed in answering each evaluation question.
Describe the research approaches to be used to answer each question and why they are appropriate to the evaluation questions posed.
Describe in specific detail how data will be collected related to each of your evaluative criteria/indicators. Discuss exactly how the data be collected, when, and by whom. Describe any data collection tools in terms of their development and appropriateness in answering the evaluation questions. Provide information on validity and reliability of tools, if available. Explain why the data collection methods are appropriate to the research approach, type of data, and purpose of the evaluation.
Describe how you will analyze the data, including specific statistical tests to be used. Include dummy data tables if applicable to show how you will display your findings.

LEADERSHIP & ECONOMIC MODELS

Students are required to submit weekly journal entries throughout the course. These reflective narratives help students identify important learning events that happen throughout the course and the practicum. In each week’s entry, students should reflect on the personal knowledge and skills gained.

Write a reflection journal (250 words) to outline what has been discovered about your professional practice, personal strengths and weaknesses, and additional resources that could be introduced in a given situation to influence optimal outcomes. Each week there will be a specific focus to use in your reflection. Integrate leadership and inquiry into the current practice. Please make sure to address all areas in your writing.

How research was used to show an area of improvement

Research is increasingly becoming an important and expected activity within public safety agencies. In this discussion, you will conduct research to find specific examples of how research was used to show an area of improvement or that led to an improvement in practice. While searching for your examples, be certain to focus on at least 2 different institutional scenarios within the public safety system.

Regression analysis

If a regression analysis was to be completed on body mass index (BMI), what could be an independent variable in that analysis? Why? If we could, what other independent variables should be included in the analysis? What statistic(s) would show the value of that regression in understanding BMI?

Alternatively, find an article that uses regression analysis to study a medical concern. In that study, what was the dependent variable and what were the independent variable(s)? Further, how would you use this study to highlight the difference between correlations and causation?

Statistical probability models

Utilizing statistical probability models, you will be able to evaluate and analyze business data under uncertainty conditions. You will also be able to create and test hypotheses and draw conclusions based on samples of data.

Reflection
Consider the following:

Many business activities generate data that can be thought of as random. An example described in the textbook is the servicing of cars at an oil change shop. Each car entering the shop can be considered an experiment with random outcomes. A variable of interest in this experiment could be the amount of time necessary to service the car. Service time will vary randomly with each car. Often, we can capture the most relevant characteristics of a stochastic process with a simple probability distribution model. We can then analyze the model to make predictions and drive decisions. For instance, we could estimate the number of technicians the oil change shop needs to service demand on a Saturday afternoon.

Respond to the following questions:

What is a random variable?
How would you differentiate a discrete from a continuous random variable?
A laptop manufacturing company has implemented a 2-step process to test the quality of each production batch. In the first step, a technician randomly selects 15 laptops from the batch and determines whether they meet specifications. The batch is considered acceptable provided no more than 1 laptop fails to meet specifications. Otherwise, the entire batch has to be tested in the second step. Historical data shows that 95% of the laptops produced adhere to specifications.

How statistics are used in your field

Conduct research and find at least two examples of how statistics are used in your field

Your response should be detailed and specific.

Here’s an example for a student who is going into the field of nursing: Statistics such as blood pressure, temperature, cholesterol, or weight are used to describe a patient’s current health status and determine whether each value lies within a normal range of values.
