County Health Rankings

Find the county where you grew up at www.countyhealthrankings.org. Where does your county rank overall in the state where you grew up? In what areas does your county have relatively good health (higher ranking)? What factors do you think contribute to your county doing well in these areas? In what areas does your county have relatively poorer health (lower ranking)? What factors do you think contribute to your county doing poorly in these areas? Based on your experiences, news articles, or other sources, provide two examples of health disparities and two examples of health inequities impacting your county. Explain your answer and cite your sources. Then, apply the 5 recommended actions from the Sampson et al (2016) article to your county/state. Provide one specific action that can be taken by your county/state that aligns with each recommendation. Briefly describe who should be involved (e.g., people, organizations), how to implement the recommendations, etc.
Your reflection paper should be at least 3 pages in length. Your paper should reflect a deeper consideration of the course topics/activities for this week.

Planning a Career in Public Relations

You will graduate from college in several months and plan on pursuing a career in public relations. After applying for a number of positions, you receive two job offers.

One is with a national chain of pizza parlors. The corporate communications department has about 20 professionals, and it is customary for beginners to start in employee relations and write articles for the company’s website and intranet. Later, with more experience, you might be assigned to do marketing communications or work in a specialized area such as investor relations, governmental affairs, or even community relations.

The second job offer is from a local office of a large, national public relations firm. You would begin as an assistant account executive and work on several accounts, including a chain of fast-food restaurants and a manufacturer of computer keyboards. The starting pay is about the same, but the pizza chain offers better health and pension benefits.

The impact of COVID-19 on those with chronic disease

The rationale for the assignment: The impact of COVID-19 has been particularly profound for those with chronic disease; heart disease, diabetes, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, and obesity are all conditions that increase the risk for severe illness from COVID-19 (7). Other factors, including smoking, also increase the risk. Newly emerging evidence indicates. The syndemic nature of COVID-19, unraveling the complex dynamics between emerging health challenges with co-existent endemic. The syndemics highlight the social systems’ fragilities, the level of health literacy, and ideological divisions deeply rooted in the modern society of the United States. The COVID-19 presents opportunities to enact holistic efforts to address all the major chronic diseases we have studied so far. Therefore, I design this assignment to further enhance your understanding of the syndemic nature of chronic diseases. .

Learning objectives:

Apply what we have learnt so far from this course to approach a newly emerging public health issues.
Learn how to highlight a chronic disease related research paper.
Demonstrate basic critique skill on research reports.
Appreciate the contributions/impact of research performed by someone you may know very well.
Specific tasks to be completed:

What is your definition of “syndemic?”
What is “social co-morbidity?”
How to describe the relationship between cigarette tax and disease burden of COVID-19 using the evidence presented in the study.
Walk away message from this study? (<30 words).
Identify 5 issues from the manuscript, any issues are accounted, spelling errors, grammar inappropriateness, unclear sentences, poor citation, or incorrect statements. Please list the issues in your answer sheet rather make notes on the manuscript.

Oil Pollution

Focus on the negative impact of oil and petroleum productions on the natural environment. Much discussion in recent years has focused on ending out reliance on oil, however we continue to face environmental health challenges because of its toxicity to the environment, and destructive mean of extraction and processing. The goal is to inform reader and raise awareness of the serious environmental health problem associated with the used of oil.
– Content requirements:
o Environmental health topic clearly defined
o Background information about the environmental problem
o Key indicators, measures used to describe the problem
o The nature and magnitude of associated health effects
o Who is affected by it, discussion of target population
o Risk factors for the problem, how does exposure occur
o Identification of past and/or current efforts to address the problem
o How do you recommend the problem should be addressed? What is your rational for these recommendations?

Social Influences on Health

Goal: This paper is designed to make you think critically and succinctly about the role social influences have on our health experiences.
Basic Task: Write 600-800 words (approximately 2 pages) on how structural social forces influence health disparities.
Why are you doing this: In public health we often discuss population health rather individual health – it is critical for you to think about why this is the
influential way to solve health problems.
Steps:
Pick a health issue that you enjoy reading and thinking about (e.g., cervical cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV, etc.). NOTE: This should be a different
health issue than what you focused on in the first paper.
Go to the CDC (or similar site) and find out who experiences the most cases of this health issue.
Also go and find a peer-reviewed journal article (or multiple) that discusses your health issue.
Think about what we have discussed in class – what are the ways health behavior has been influenced for this issue. For instance do social norms prevent
someone from asking their partner to wear a condom or about their STI history? Or does someone think that covid is a myth and that prevents them from
getting vaccinated?
Write an outline for this paper, including sources. THIS IS PART 1.
This outline should NOT be: Intro, Body 1: Health issue, Body 2: Population, Body 3: Behavioral Cause, Conclusion.
A detailed outline should provide key points you will focus on in your paper.
It should outline how you are connecting disjointed topics.
Paints the picture of how you are making your thesis in the paper.
This allows me to provide you feedback and say, “think about this source.” Or “these points do not actually connect.”
Now that you have feedback and have thought about it a bit more, write it into a paper. THIS IS PART 2.
Make sure to have 3-5 sources. Sources should be in APA format. They should be peer-reviewed or government sources (CDC, FDA, DHHS, etc.).

Transtheoretical Model

This is more of a discussion post, not essay.
Provide a brief overview of your understanding of the overall application of the Transtheoretical Model (TM) to real-world behavioral change.
Include a descriiption of two of the five stages of the TM and provide an example of how each of the selected two stages functions in real-world behavioral change.
Explain one of the TM concepts (decisional balance, situational self-efficacy, and processes of change). Describe how the selected concept impacts a client’s
behavioral change in the area of health.

Real-life Ethical Dilemmas

Examine the case of Baby Boy Doe (Darr, 2011, p. 16.) The objective of this assignment is to get you to think critically about real-life ethical dilemmas and the moral principles involved. There is no right or wrong answer, just try to look at this case subjectively. Most of the time, resolving ethical dilemmas is not so “black and white.” Discuss arguments for and against the issues below.
1. Discuss what makes this an ethical dilemma (read pp. 3 and 4).
2. Discuss the implications of this study in terms of the moral principles described in chapter 1.
Here are some questions that may guide your thinking:
Respect for persons: Did the hospital/ physicians allow the parents to be autonomous in their decision-making? Do you see any elements of paternalism on behalf of the physicians?
Beneficence: Did the hospital/ physicians act beneficently?
Nonmaleficence: Did the hospital/ physicians consider nonmaleficence?
Justice: Did the hospital act in a just way?
3. Finally, do you think that the hospital did all that it could in this situation? Did it act appropriately? Explain.
