The Ethics of Abortion Legislation in Texas

You have recently been elected as a Republican to the Texas Senate from a competitive district (even number of Democrats, Republicans and Independents) just outside of Dallas. One of the first bills that you must vote on is House Bill 3- a bill to restrict abortion to cases of rape and incest after a fetal heartbeat is detected. Your constituents support the bill as does the Governor your party, because they believe abortion is immoral. However, you oppose the bill because you believe women have a right to make a choice and the bill will result in many babies being born to parents who are financially, emotionally or mentally unable to take care of them. The Speaker of the House opposes the bill as well.

In explaining how you will vote on the bill, be sure to explain the following:

What Representational Role you will adopt (trustee, delegate or politico). (Unit 4 Written Lectures, Slide 4-25). Be sure to discuss all three representational roles.
How will the Speaker of the House, the Lt. Governor and Governor of Texas influence the fate of the bill? (Unit 4 Written Lectures, Slides 4-9, 4-10, 4-18 & 4-22)
How do you think constituents might try to influence your vote? (Unit 4 Written Lectures, Slide 4-20)
Which factors noted above and in your notes (constituents, governor, party leaders and your own opinion) will influence your vote? Rank them in importance. (Unit 4, Written Lectures, Slide 4-20, 4-21)
Will you vote for or against the bill? Please explain your answer thoroughly. You should refer back to the representational role here. (Unit 4 Written Lectures, Slide 4-25)

The Importance of Voting and Being Informed on Civic Issues

In this assignment, you will explain the civic, societal and individual importance of voting. While you of course may insert your own opinion (I think you should), I would encourage you to find outside resources which discuss the importance of voting. Cite at least two outside resources in the Chicago style.

In your own words, answer the following questions. 200-300 words

Why is it important to vote?
Why is it important to be well informed on civic issues?
Considering your previous answers what is your responsibility to your community when it comes to voting and being informed on civic issues?

our answer needs to tell me why voting is important as well as why it’s important to be an informed voter. Lastly, you need to tell me what, exactly you believe your responsibilities as a voter are.

The rising prevalence of mental health disorders among college students is a growing concern that requires immediate attention

Problem Statement (Approximately 1.5 -2 pages)
In this section, define the problem WITHOUT defining the solution (example: “there are too many homeless families”, NOT “there is too little shelter for homeless families”).
Start with a short statement that concisely states the problem.
Follow with some evidence that the problem exists. Think about the impacts of the problem. Who or what is affected by it? Is it widely distributed or concentrated?
Use data from reliable sources to support your claims. Some examples of data include:
Government reports
Needs assessments
Program evaluations
Forecasts/Projections
Community surveys
Remember, you are setting boundaries on the problem in this section- be as narrow as necessary for the audience you have selected. You also want to clearly convey to the audience that this is a problem that they are responsible for addressing.
Stakeholders (Approximately 1 page)
In this section, list and describe the parties with interest in the issue you have identified. How do different stakeholders perceive the problem? What are their objectives in resolving the problem?

Finding the Balance: Social Programs vs. Defense Spending

In determining how a government spends its money, there are limited resources and many competing programs needing resources. This is the classic guns vs. butter debate. Learn about it here: https://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/08/guns-butter.asp

Looking at their hypothetical graph, where do you think the balance should be on spending for social programs versus defense programs? What policies would need to change to spend money the way you think it should be spent? What is one program/policy you think we could do without, and what is one you think should be dramatically increased?

The National Rifle Association (NRA): A Powerful Interest Group

Pick any one interest group. Research how the group functions. In 2-3 pages tell me:
where they operate/office location(s) or headquarters location and what their “cause/mission” is
What type of interest group are they? Are they a pressure group, non-profit (business, issue etc.), PAC etc.
What functions do they provide for their membership/group?
If they have no membership levels, how do they overcome the free rider problem and raise money for their mission? (
What strategies do they employ?
