The Importance of Calcium: A Personal Report

Topic: Calcium deficiency
Info: I am a female, 24 years old, my intake in calcium is deficient.
Writing a mini report:
Focusing on the micronutrient you have chosen, your mini report should be structured around the following aspects:
1. Micronutrient: Be clear on which micronutrient you are discussing
2. DRI: Provide the RDA or AI and UL or CDRR that applies to your selected micronutrient
3. Your Intake: Describe your intake and whether it is excessive or deficient and by how much. Outline the reasons as to why you think your intake is deficient or excessive.
4. Symptoms and Health Implications: What are potential symptoms and concerns with your intake (i.e., deficient or excessive). Note: If your intake is deficient, you only need to describe the health concerns associated with a deficiency; if your intake is excessive, you only need to describe the health concerns associated with an excessive intake.
5. Recommendations for Improvement: Provide ideas of dietary choices and changes that you could implement to help meet your DRI’s. Your suggested dietary changes should consider the impact of the micronutrient of interest, and how it may affect your intake of other nutrients.

Dietary Advice I Received as a Child

Clean your plate! Remember, there are children starving in other places, so do not waste food. Always eat in moderation! Stop eating when you feel full! Your eyes are always bigger than your stomach!
These are just some examples of the different lessons (advice) shared with children about food and eating. In this post, you are asked to reflect on the guidance you received about eating during your childhood.
Include the following in your reflection:
What dietary advice were you given as a child?
Now that you are an adult, what do you think of this advice?
Did it help or hurt you?
How? Consider the process of providing dietary advice.
What advice will/did you give your children?
What advice would you recommend the parents of young children to share? Include one external reference
Choose one of the statements made about eating in the introduction to this discussion.
What does the statement suggest about eating?
Does the statement provide good advice or not?
What would you say to a parent you overheard offering this advice to their children? Include one external reference.
Please be sure to validate your opinions and ideas with citations and references in APA format.

FOOD DIARY (DIET RECORD)

FOOD DIARY (DIET RECORD)

For FIVE days, record everything that you eat and drink. (Alternatively, you may interview a friend or family member to collect this data.) Include any condiments (ketchup, butter, salad dressing, etc.), snacks, alcohol, beverages, and water. It is very important that you select five TYPICAL days. Dietary choices should not be altered for this assignment. In other words, don’t change what is usually eaten to appear “better”. No one is graded or judged on what is eaten. This is an opportunity to practice collecting/organizing data, and to analyze that data based on what we are learning in this class.
Data Collection
For each item that is consumed, record the following information:

  1. Name of food or drink
  2. Amount consumed (in number of servings)
  3. Amount of carbohydrates (in grams)
  4. Amount of proteins (in grams)
  5. Amount of lipids (in grams)
  6. Amount of fiber (in grams)
  7. Amount of alcohol (in grams; if applicable)
  8. Amount of total Calories
  9. Specific time of day the food/drink was consumed (i.e., indicating breakfast or lunch is insufficient)
If food or beverage is consumed from a restaurant, you can obtain nutritional information online from the restaurant website. There are also multiple free apps available that can be used as a resource, such as “MyFitnessPal”. If you utilize an app to record your data, you must still create your own data table in Word. Print outs from an app will NOT be accepted.
    Data Presentation
You will turn in this information as a well-organized, easily readable table that you create (do not use the tools that are in your app). Please make sure your data is organized into a single table that allows you to easily add up macronutrient data and compare foods. EACH food or beverage should have its own row of information in your table. Save the information from your food diary, as the next assignment will be based on this data.
    Insert your table here
    Questions
After collecting the data, answer the following questions in blue font.
  10. Do you see a pattern in the time of day when the greatest amount of food is consumed? If so, is this time of day conducive to a healthy lifestyle? Please elaborate on what a healthy lifestyle is in your answer.
  11. Do you see a tendency to eat unhealthy foods on a regular basis? If so, when did this pattern start? Please elaborate on why this pattern began. If you eat healthy the majority of the time, what strategies do you use to ensure that you continue to do so?
  12. How do you feel this diet compares to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA)? Your response should demonstrate a clear understanding of the DGA. This means you need to be as specific as possible. For a refresher, please visit this link: 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines Be sure to pay careful attention to the information on pages 3 & 4.
If the diet does not compare well, discuss at least two specific things that could be changed in diet and/or lifestyle to make it more consistent with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
If the diet does compare well, what are two specific suggestions to help someone else that may be struggling to meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans?

Difference between total sugars and added sugars

Look at the nutrition labels for the two breakfast bars below, also paying close attention to the ingredient lists provided in each. Answer the following questions:
What is the difference between total sugars and added sugars? How do the total sugars and added sugars differ in these two bars? Be specific.
What are the biggest differences in the ingredient lists in these bars? Explain.
Choose one ingredient that you have not heard of from the list from either bar. Explain to the class what the ingredient is and what its purpose is.
In response to your peers: Discuss how you will apply both the information you learned and the information they shared to your future shopping trips.Blueberry Rx Bar:

Nutrition for Life.

Think about the food contaminants affecting everyday foods.
Consider policies and regulations designed to protect the food supply. Are they effective?
Choose a food issue that is important to you. It may be an issue presented in your book or another one of your choice. Some suggested topics may include: food-borne illness, food additives and preservatives, pesticides, malnutrition, artificial sweeteners, water quality, et cetera.
With these thoughts in mind:

Post a 2- to 3-paragraph summary outlining the risks associated with a particular food safety issue. Be sure to include the following:

Justify why it is a food safety issue.
Correlate your food issue to a disease or health concern.
Evaluate and suggest 2–3 steps that could reduce the impact or eliminate the food issue.
Be sure to support your ideas by connecting them to the week’s Learning Resources, or something you have read, heard, seen, or experienced. Use at least two APA-formatted references for full credit.

Introduction to Nutrition Research, Communication, and Careers

Part 1: Understanding Ethics in Research

To understand the historical context that created the Belmont Report, watch this video: https://videocast.nih.gov/summary.asp?Live=11525&bhcp=1

Then, write a one-paragraph reflection of what you learned about the Belmont Report from this video.

Part 2: Read the Belmont Report

We are going to look at a primary document from the federal register, the Belmont Report. Read the Belmont Report (http://www.hhs.gov/ohrp/regulations-and-policy/belmont-report/index.html) and then answer the following questions.

  1. What are the differences among the three ethical principles listed in the Belmont Report (respect for persons, beneficence, and justice)? Make sure to provide a definition for each one, using your own words.
  2. You are planning to conduct a research project at an elementary school, and you are planning to conduct interviews with all the children in a third-grade class. Would this require Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval? Why or why not? What concept(s) in the Belmont Report apply to this scenario?
  3. Give an example of a situation when disclosing all the information about a study might alter the validity of the study. Explain what a researcher should do in this situation.
  4. Think back to the research study you created. What ethical considerations would you need to keep in mind, now that you are knowledgeable about the Belmont Report and the IRB approval process?
