Analyzing the Organizational Structure and Culture of a Consulting Firm

Scenario (fictional):
An industry consulting firm has the following structure and culture: All the employees at this consulting firm work full-time. All the full-time consultants report to various industry directors, depending on the industry contract. The company employees work mostly from home, with directors or consultants renting temporary office space with or without video conferencing when needed for either client meetings or vendor meetings. The company is very successful and has an expanding client base. There are very few rules or expectations at the company, as the CEO also believes in keeping processes very simple. The previous president retired about 6 months ago, and the CEO, together with a human resources firm, hired a new president. The new company president they hired is extremely smart and expects everyone at the company to display an expert demeanor as well. About 2 months ago, the companys employees (i.e., consultants) started receiving emails from the new president putting pressure on all of them to produce results in less time but pressuring them to charge the clients higher fees without making any more money for themselves. In addition, the new president now wants the staff to come into the temporary office three times a week for meetings. Three months ago, the new president hired 30 new full-time consultants that seem more like salespersons than consultants to existing employees. A few of the long-time consultants have been emailing the CEO about these changes and suggesting they may go elsewhere. In the meantime, the finance director has detected several anomalies in the contract terms and financial results from some of the new consultants and one or two of the existing consultants. Describe the organizational structure at this consulting firm and how it affects employee behavior: Name the type of structure in the organization. Provide a definition of the type of structure in the organization. Explain how the structure affects employee behavior. Describe how the changes to the organizations culture might affect employee behavior. Provide a recommendation for any adjustments you think need to be made at this organization based on the readings and explain why.

Analyzing Investment Performance: A Comprehensive Review

In this final report, your team will assess the performance of your investment strategies in a one- to two-page, double-spaced paper. You may attach as many pages of tables and exhibits as you wish. Here are some notes/suggestions for the final HTMW Report:The bulk of your report should NOT consist of a listing of every individual stock and/or trade you have made during the project timeline (you man include this as an appendix or as a separate Excel file). However, the following topics should be addressed:
1. The evolution of your portfolio composition over time. Discuss the following (using the start-middle-end compositions):
A. The investment philosophy (and any changes therein with explanation)
B. The level of diversification (and any changes therein with explanation)
C. The level of risk carried by your portfolio as compared to the Market (and any changes therein with explanation)
D. The risk-adjusted performance of your portfolio for the middle and end portions (and any changes therein with explanation)
2. Be sure to include the following information in your report:
A. What was the total return on your benchmark portfolio (use ^GSPC from Yahoo! Finance as your benchmark)?
B. Did you do better or worse than the S&P 500? Can you explain why? Be specific! Remember, you dont need to adjust this portfolio for taxes or fees for this comparison.
C. Define how risky your portfolio was in terms of a weighted beta compared to the S&P 500. (Note: This doesnt need to be exact for those who made many trades. Just try to estimate the beta of the portfolio over this period as accurately as possible. Beta of cash is zero.)
D. How did your portfolio perform compared to the S&P 500 on a risk-adjusted basis? (Note: The beta for the S&P 500 is equal to one. Use the CAPM with the S&P 500 as your expected return parameter.)
3. What did you learn from this assignment and this class that will make you a more knowledgeable investor? Be specific!
4. What adjustments did you make in the second portion of the stock challenge?
5. Discuss, what you have learned about forming portfolios
6. Discuss, in retrospect what you would have done differently if you knew of Day 1 what you know today.
7. How will you apply this knowledge in your personal life going forward (e.g., in your retirement planning)? Finally:Write the report like you are writing it to your current investors, explaining your performance. You should also tailor it so that it is attractive to new investors.Proofread the submission before you submit it. Correct and spelling and grammar issues.

Recognizing and Valuing Family Contexts in Educational Settings

Akuna Primary School has an extensive and flourishing community garden. Produce from the garden is sold by families and teachers at the local farmers market. Many families volunteer to help maintain the garden (which can be done at any time convenient to each family) and run the market stall (which takes place on a Saturday morning). Based on family interest in the garden and market stall, teachers arranged a talk by a prominent permaculture expert, in the hope that this would increase families knowledge of gardening and produce. The talk was held on a Tuesday evening at 7pm. Only 5 families attended the talk. Teachers were disappointed with the attendance and couldnt understand why families were not as interested in the talk as they were in the community garden.Questions:In what ways has the education setting recognised and valued the family contexts when planning the garden/market stall and the permaculture talk? Why are the garden and market stall so popular with families, yet few families attended the evening talk? Reflect on the contextual issues of partnerships. Here are some prompts to guide your discussion:Consider how teachers could have increased the families engagement in relation to building knowledge about gardening and produce.Consider whether teachers have overlooked families contexts and what changes you could implement to cater for the diverse families in the setting.Identify two components that make for good partnerships and discuss how these could be used by teachers in ECEC settings / schools, to improve family engagement within their learning communities.
