Scenario: It has been 10 years since you were first hired on as a special projects manager for the Big City Chocolate Company. In that time, BCCC has achieved great success, thanks in no small part to your successful signature product line the College Collection, which now includes licensed chocolates for all of the major area schools, along with several out-of-state schools.
Credit for much of BCCC’s recent success also belongs to Amy Jenkins, the enthusiastic young designer who first pitched the idea of a social media plan to help promote the College Collection. Her creativity and dedication have helped her earn a position as BCCC’s Director of Social Media. In this position, Amy is responsible for establishing and maintaining BCCC’s presence on social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Amy has recently earned a BA in Marketing, she stays current in her field, and is an active member of the Association for Business Communication.
Amy also works with you on customer service issues involving the four stores that fall under your supervision as Retail Manager. For example, Amy passed along to you a recent review on Yelp.com which said: “Pet peeve: When you ask for a Coke or a cup of coffee ‘for here,’ they still serve it in a Styrofoam cup. You have to specifically request a mug or glass.” With that information, you were able to implement a procedure to prompt servers to ask if dine-in customers would prefer a mug or a to-go cup. When Amy replied to the customer’s review with an apology and details about the new procedure, the customer changed her review on Yelp from four stars to a full five stars.
Sarina and Steve Andersen now have a more aggressive agenda than when it comes to expanding the business. They have made it a priority for all BCCC employees to be actively seeking opportunities to attract new clients. When you recently came across the following Request for Proposals (RFP), your interest was piqued:

RFP: Small Business in the Digital Age
The Big City Association of Small Business Owners is accepting proposals for presentations for its upcoming conference, Small Business in the Digital Age. Our members are busy entrepreneurs, trying to manage and grow their businesses with limited resources. Ideal presentations will give attendees an overview of how technology is changing a particular aspect of small business and, most importantly, give them low-cost tips and practices they can incorporate right away.
Please submit a letter of interest that includes a brief overview of your credentials, a summary of your proposed presentation, and explanation of how your presentation will benefit those who run growing small businesses.
Speakers are able to attend the conference free of charge. Your bio and company contact information will be featured prominently in the program. Additionally, speakers will be given a digital list of the names and addresses of attendees.
***
You see an opportunity here: conferences are a great way to learn more about your craft, establish contacts within the local business community, and meet potential new clients. Especially enticing is the list of contact information for attendees, which you will be able to use to contact potential new clients for BCCC.
There is only one problem: you are sure that the Association will be inundated with proposals about how to market your small business using social media. However, you believe you can craft a unique presentation based on the experience and expertise both you and Amy have acquired in your years of helping lead BCCC to its current success.
You and Amy decide to craft a presentation that combines your expertise in writing, marketing, and customer service, showing the audience how those factors are interrelated when it comes to using social media effectively. The two of you will team up to present at the conference if your proposal is accepted.
Amy wisely suggests that you identify your strengths and competitive advantages in this situation. You come up with the following:
• We work for a small business with the same challenges and goals as the audience.
• We have experience crafting and executing social media strategies for our business.
• We have a unique presentation because it incorporates three crucial areas of expertise related to using social media.
Assignment: As stated in Textbook Module 21, proposals should include what you’re going to accomplish, how you’ll do so, and evidence that you will succeed. Write a 1-2 page proposal letter (what the RFP calls a “letter of interest”) in response to the RFP from the Big City Association of Small Business Owners. Be sure to include an informative subject line and all information called for in the RFP (a brief overview of your credentials, a summary of your proposed presentation, and explanation of how your presentation will benefit those who run growing small businesses).
Open with goodwill and use the direct organization. Align objectives and account for differences. Identify and emphasize competitive advantages and meaningful strengths. (In this case, how will your knowledge and experience and Amy’s knowledge and experience benefit attendees?)
Follow the letter format on page 131, Figure 9.4 for the letter. If the letter is over 1 page, follow the format in Figure 9.5 on page 134 for the second page (name of reader or organization at the left margin, page number centered, and date at right margin). The address of the Big City Association of Small Business Owners is 144 Tamiami Trail, Big City, FL 33912. Big City Chocolate Company’s address is 516 Airport Way, Big City, FL 33913.
Your proposal letter will be graded on correct use of language and overall professionalism as well as the Red, Orange, Yellow, and Green Strategies listed below (a more detailed rubric for Writing Assignment 3 can be found in the Week 4 Module).

According to Loren Soeiro in Is Social Media Bad For You?, what implications does social media use have on individual’s mental health? Do any of the described implications resonate with you? If so, why? If you disagree with the negative implications, describe what positive outcomes may come from social media use. Be sure to also draw on Sternheimer’s arguments from Ch. 3 (“Does Social Networking Kill?”) in your response.
The media formats available in today’s world of computer information technology support a vast spectrum of uses and interests, ranging from recreational games to artificially intelligent machines that make critical decisions impacting people’s lives. Describe the overall benefits that media formats in IT have on society and the economy as a whole. Your answer should include at least one of the more popular media formats from these areas: gaming, artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality, parallel life (e.g. Second Life), the entertainment industries, or education. Explore a minimum of two potential benefits and two drawbacks of your selected media formats for their impact in both society and on the economy. Cite at least one resource. Write a multi-paragraph response.
Write a 5 – 8 page research-based paper using proper APA formatting that describes the problems related to social media in the workplace and propose solutions on how a company could address these issues. The page count does not include the cover page or reference page. An abstract is not required. The Library has a section on proper APA formatting with useful resources. The Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) (Links to an external site.) is a very useful, easy to navigate resource. The paper will have the following sections: an introduction; a review of the related literature that highlights the problems found with social media and how it impacts the workplace; a proposed solution on how to address each problem; a concise conclusion that wraps up and unfies the central themes a reference page (a minimum of five (5) scholarly resources must be used. (Wikipedia and similar types of information are not valid references). Popular resources may be used if they add important information to the paper. Please review information in the Start Here module regarding scholarly and non-scholarly resources. Papers shall follow APA guidelines and be submitted as a MS Word document with all resources properly cited within the body and listed on the reference page.
After analyzing and discussing the role of self-representation in our media in the form of the selfie and exploring the way frames trump facts (Harris and Carbado 527), we have a better understanding of the way the media [is] both author and reader of events in ways that both challeng[e] and underwr[i]te misconceptions about race, gender, culture, religion, disability, socio-economic status, and identity (531). Chimamanda Adichie also reinforces this view in her TED Talk, The Danger of a Single Story, expressing that when there is a limited view of a person or a people, through a single story that is repeated over and over, this can diminish identity and can take away dignity. In fact, all three authors contend that our rights in society may be reduced due to assumptions made and the stereotypes created. But Adichie also promises a return of paradise when a wide range of stories is shared. After reading the emotional narrative essays about the writers diverse experiences and their attempts to reclaim their true identity in the face of stereotypes, you are now prepared to consider the question: What story is being told about you? This assignment asks you to think about an aspect of your identity that is often depicted in the media. Your goal is to inform readers about the way media representations can either 1) create and perpetuate stereotypes, stereotypes that can make it more difficult to see the inherent dignity and humanity of individuals, or 2) re-educate and enlighten people, offering a clearer or more authentic depiction, even correcting stereotypes and positively capturing your identity.
