You may have seen dramatic “worst-case” scenarios for global climate change presented in movies such as Geostorm (2017), The Day After Tomorrow (2004), or Waterworld (1995). These depictions typically portray total social collapse as the inevitable result of global climate change, but is this reasonable?

Based on your understanding of climate change, identify the social consequences of a realistic “worst-case” scenario of global climate change.

What of these impacts might be of the greatest concern in communicating risks to the public?

What constitutes a just war? Do you consider recent U.S. wars, such as the war in Afghanistan, the Iraq War begun in 2003, and the war on terror to be just? Why or why not? Are just wars social problems?

Imagine a world without prisons. What would it be like to live in that world? Would there be more crime, and if so, how much more? Do you believe it is the fear of prison that keeps most people from violating the law? Why or why not?

Nature vs. Nurture

There is an ongoing debate of the relative importance of Nature vs. Nurture in language development.  B.F. Skinner started the investigation with behavioral learning theory.  Noam Chomsky and others argue that there is a universal set of abstract grammatical rules and that the human brain is uniquely suited to learn language.  Later, researchers such as Lois Bloom saw a correlation between language and early cognition, maintaining that there is a semantic basis for language learning.  Then along came the constructionists who believed that language emerges from social use.
Review the theories put forth by the theorists below:

Bloom
Tomasello
Piaget
Vygotsky
Choose two theorists from above and discuss one strength and one weakness of each theory.  Borrowing ideas from Skinner, Chomsky, Bloom, Tomasello, Piaget, and Vygotsky how would you articulate your own theory of linguistic development?  Support your opinion with at least one scholarly resource.

Emotional Intelligence framework for the influencer

There is old saying by Benjamin Franklin in 1750 “There are three things extremely hard, Steel, a Diamond and to know one’s self”. The attachment includes two news scripts, related to charisma effect on crowd. The effect of charisma is highly debatable: is it relative i.e. work for a group but not for other, or absolute works for all people across the board. Also, is the charisma something born with or can be developed. Regardless where the truth lies, we are more interested to learn the real merit of leadership. More importantly, not to be influenced by bad leadership models camouflaged under charismatic demeanor of the influencer. Answer the following:

  1. Compare the scenarios against the Emotional Intelligence framework for the influencer
  2. Compare the scenarios against the Emotional Intelligence framework for the follower
  3. Do you think that we need to develop a defense wall on our “Self Awareness” and our deep understanding for the “Social Awareness”. In order not to be manipulated by strong influencers.
  4. Do you think that you can magnify your charisma/influence by strong understanding for others weak spots in their “Self Awareness” or your strong understanding for the society/ cultural mandates?
  5. How do you see the role of the code of conduct to mitigate/damper our cruel intensions to manipulate potential vulnerable followers.
