Climate change

How might the way climate change is discussed in the media and by politicians influence climate change research and funding for that research?
How can bias, beliefs, assumptions, and values influence what we know and how we approach contemporary global issues related to the natural sciences?

Dismantling the Cabrini Green public housing complex,

In dismantling the Cabrini Green public housing complex, Chicago sought to disrupt a “culture of poverty” and introduce residents to a “middle-class way of life.” Explain two problems with (or unintended consequences of) demolishing Cabrini Green as a poverty reduction strategy. with (or unintended consequences of) demolishing Cabrini Green as a poverty reduction strategy.

Global warming

Many scientists view global warming as the most important environmental issue facing the Earth’s ecosystems. Many models developed by scientists have predicted a warming of the Earth that is correlated with increased carbon dioxide emissions which are associated with the combustion of fossil fuels. However, over the past 10 years, the rate that the Earth is warming has outpaced some of the models. Scientists have realized that “feedback loops,” not considered in some of their models, are likely responsible for the unprecedented warming. A feedback loop is a system in which the output of a system impacts its own production. In a positive feedback loop, the output increases the production.

In a negative feedback loop, the output decreases the production. Briefly discuss and explain what global warming is and how this phenomenon could impact our planet as well as why we should be concerned about global warming. Hint: Climate change/weather patterns/ balanced ecosystems etc.

Endangered species

Today, no less than 3,079 species of animals are endangered due to excessive hunting, the illegal traffic of skin and animal products in some parts of the world or because of climate change. Many countries are making active efforts to try to stop this phenomena. They are not only trying to stimulate the reproduction of the few animals that still survive, but they are creating natural reservations where they are offering the perfect habitat for the renewal of the species. Research endangered species and report back with specific examples of how scientists and concerned people are trying to prevent more species from being added to the list.

Overpopulation

Overpopulation of planet Earth is real. This not only leads to excessive pollution, but also to the degradation of the soil and the decreasing of the natural resources. Scientists came up with some ideas to control the overpopulation and to develop some renewable resources or alternative types of energy. Research this topic more and see what specific ideas scientists are working on to address this growing concern.
