Comprehensive Assessment Outline: Cultural Considerations in Cuban Healthcare

Create an outline for your comprehensive assessment of how your selected cultural group’s beliefs and practices might impact healthcare decision-making, treatment adherence, your communication, your interventions, and your education to align with the patient’s cultural values and preferences.
The culture is the Cuban culture.

Exploring Cultural Stigma in Illness Attribution

Part 1

Reflection Question: In what ways are the personal/cultural values you hold affecting your physical and/or emotional health?
My personal and cultural values significantly impact my physical and emotional health. For instance, my culture’s emphasis on hard work often leads me to prioritize professional success over self-care, affecting my physical well-being. Additionally, cultural expectations regarding familial duty can result in feelings of guilt or anxiety when I prioritize my own needs. Moreover, societal stigma surrounding mental health in my culture can lead to suppression of emotions and increased stress levels. Recognizing these influences is essential in developing a wellness plan that addresses both physical and emotional well-being.

In Part 2 of the Wellness plan you will think about the cultural concept of stigma.
Reflection Question:
 Describe a time when being ill was considered to be your fault and a time when the fault of being ill was considered to belong elsewhere? Include what multicultural factors you think may have been involved (class, gender, tradition, family status, customs, age etc.) (Cultural concept refresh: Essentials chapter 5). If you cannot think of anything for that describe a general stigma and its impact on health.

Exploring the Deaf Community for Cultural Immersion

Identify a culture to focus on for your project. Keep in mind that the term “culture” is not limited to a particular race or ethnicity but is much broader and includes gender, age, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, physical ability, religion, political affiliations, immigration status, military membership, etc. It would be wise to select a culture that you know little about, one that you anticipate encountering often in your work as an advanced human services professional practitioner, and one that you are able to access through planned activities in your community (e.g., religious service, festival, exhibit, etc.).
• Select a culture to focus on for your Immersion Project that is different from the culture(s) with which you identify. You may select a culture that is discussed in this week’s Learning Resources or one that is not.
• Find an activity of the culture that you could observe before Day 7 of Week 4.
• Consider how the culture you select is different from the culture(s) with which you identify.
• Reflect on your current perceptions of the culture you selected.

Culturally Diverse Lesson Plan

Create a Culturally Diverse Lesson Plan
The purpose of this lesson is to incorporate cultural diversity into a lesson. Go back to your cultural assessment piece. Using the cultural group you chose to compare to your own create a lesson that incorporates the culture you studied into the lesson.
• This lesson should focus on an element of a culture you explored in your cultural self-assessment.( please see below)
• The lesson should explore a diverse culture in depth on an age-appropriate level.
• The lesson can represent the cultures in the classroom as well as diverse cultures.
• It should not involve a holiday or food

In your lesson Consider the following:
• The nature of the learner. What do you know about the students’; attitudes, values, and beliefs; learning styles; need for structure; family/peer support groups; a sense of ethnic identity, motivation, self-image,.
• The teacher’s scholarly knowledge. What are the key concepts, skills, and understandings to be taught? What are the key questions and issues? What fact and generalizations are most important? What are the important connections between the subject matter and goals of global and multicultural education?
• How will you communicate with the family, community? What resources will you need?
Lesson Plan Details: Write a detailed outline of your class session including instructional strategies, learning tasks, key questions, key transitions, student supports, assessment strategies, and conclusion.

Cultural value dimensions

1. Identify a culture with which you work that you would like to investigate. First, choose three of Hofstede’s cultural value dimensions of this culture that are different from your own culture. Think about values and communication behaviors.
• Explain the cultural value dimensions of the culture different from your own.
• Compare and contrast those values and behaviors to your own culture.
• Share specific examples of how there may be misunderstandings due to these cultural values and communication behavior differences in the healthcare setting.
2. Identify ONE bias you hold about this culture. Be specific. Explain.
3. What are three important ways in which you will become more flexible in order to promote intercultural competence with a person from this culture? How will you go about monitoring your ethnocentrism with this culture? Explain. Be specific. Provide an example
