Types of crime organizations

This week we looked at four types of crime organizations, Colombian drug cartels, Mexican drug trafficking organizations, the Russian mafia, and the Italian-American mafia. How does current marijuana legalization efforts impact these organizations? How do overall legalization and decriminalization efforts impact these organizations?

The first person to use the term “white-collar crime”

Who was the first person to use the term “white-collar crime” and how did he define it? Provide two examples of white-collar crime in the 20th century and your own thoughts as to why it was becoming so widespread.
Who was Charles Ponzi and what is a Ponzi scheme? These schemes are still very much alive in the 21st century; provide a couple examples of Ponzi scheme operations today. Provide your own thoughts and comments about these types of schemes.
What is a “bait-and-switch,” telemarketing, and pyramid scams?
Where is Big Tobacco today? Look at advertising and the rise or decline in tobacco use. Is there still litigation or legislation attempting to control tobacco use? Should consumers be able to sue for voluntary use of a substance?
Find recent cases of people becoming ill from adulterated food. Who was responsible? Were they accidents or negligence? Could they have been prevented?

Crime Scene: Processing Evidence

You walk up to the crime scene. A dead body is lying on the bank of the river, just a few miles outside of the city. There is a bullet wound on the victim’s chest where it appears a bullet entered the body.

There are a few bullets that have been found scattered near the body of the victim. You can see that a gun is resting on the bottom of the river in the shallow end near the shore.

Do some online research regarding what should be done first at any crime scene and how evidence should be processed. Based on your research, and what you learned in the unit, answer the questions.

  1. Discuss the first things you should teach your new partner to do as you approach the crime scene.
  2. Explain how you and your partner should go about handling the gun found at the bottom of the river? What are some things to keep in mind?.

3.How should you and your partner go about handling the bullets found near the body of the victim?

  1. What information might you be able to find from the gun and bullets found at the crime scene?
  2. As we know, it is very important to handle evidence at a crime scene properly. If clues and evidence are mishandled, it could ruin an entire investigation! Conduct some additional online research on your own. Find an article that describes a crime scene where evidence was mishandled. Share the link to the article you found and write a paragraph or two to describe how the scene was mishandled and how this impacted the case. Include advice on how the investigation could have been better managed and how the scene and evidence should have been handled.

Defences to crime.

The law recognizes certain defences to crime. In those cases, even when an individual has committed the guilty act (actus reus) of an offense, they are not guilty of the crime charged. Why shouldn’t those who commit the guilty act always be held accountable for their actions?

Types of fraud.

Watch this video and publish in the forum an example of each type of fraud usually committed when publishing a research paper. Then, write on a classmate’s post and add one more example for one of his types of fraud.

An infinitely or indefinitely repeated Prisoner’s Dilemma game

How does an infinitely or indefinitely repeated Prisoner’s Dilemma game differ from a finitely repeated or one-time game? Review the Prisoner Dilemma game from the textbook or internet search and discuss the game; the players; the process; the outcomes or wanted/not wanted outcomes, etc… This question is left wide open so you can discuss the game wan how it applies to transportation.

Cyber Sex Crimes against Children

This week you were exposed to an array of theories that should help to jump start your research. What theory have you chosen to help you answer your research question? Please take this opportunity to practice discussing your theory in detail by explaining why you think it’s a good fit for the research project, the level of analysis it operates at, the variables it acknowledges, whether it seeks to explain or understand, and if it supports prediction. Your discussion should demonstrate a reflection upon the peer reviewed literature.

Theories covered this week:

Theory in Context
Substantive Theory
Integration of Theory
Criteria for a Good Theory
Theory and Its Different Levels
