The job of a community policing officer and that of a traditional patrol officer

What are the key differences between the job of a community policing officer and that of a traditional patrol officer?

There are calls for the abolishment of police departments taking place in today’s society. Do you think that traditional police departments should be abolished? Why or why not? What are your thoughts with regards to police budgets and calls for “defunding the police”?

Are police departments doing enough to build relationships with different communities or should there be more focus in certain areas?
Do programs such as the citizens police academy, youth explorer programs and neighborhood watch programs help police with relations in the community? Or does it create a culture of citizens who feel that they are acting in a law enforcement capacity and breakdown the trust between the community and the police?

The role of a criminal investigative analyst

You have accepted the specialized role of a criminal investigative analyst with your local police department in a mid-sized city. Discuss the role of a criminal investigative analyst, and list the duties of that position. What special talents, skills, and information will you possess in the criminal investigative analyst role that could assist federal agencies to identify potential terrorists in your area?

Changing boundaries of criminology, counting crime and measuring criminal behavior

This week’s reading provides an overview of the changing boundaries of criminology, counting crime and measuring criminal behavior, and the schools of thought throughout history pertaining to the study of those that commit a crime. After reviewing the reading for week 1, as well as the week 1 discussion articles in the lesson for this week, discuss/debate with your classmates about the early history of the criminal theory and its application to crime control i.e., Positivist School vs. Classical School, plus gender, class, and race as they relate to crime. Also, discuss if racial profiling is justifiable? Ever? If the answer is yes, discuss how effective the profiling must be to remain justified? If the answer is no, do the events of 9/11 suggest a justification for other forms of ethnic profiling?

Internet-related crime

Internet-related crime occurs every minute. Cybercriminals steal millions of dollars with near impunity. For everyone that is captured nearly 10,000 or not captured. For every one successful prosecuted in a court of law, 100 get off without punishment or with a warning. Why is it so difficult to prosecute cybercriminals?

Writing policies that might minimize criminal issues within this company.

Suppose you have just begun a position as an upper-level manager at a local business that is recovering from a large product liability suit. Criminal charges may yet be filed against the company as a result of this suit. You have been hired, in part, to help write policies that might minimize criminal issues within this company. What three policies would you immediately implement to protect the company from further damage? What three policies would you implement to prevent further lawsuits of any kind?

Police misconduct

Police misconduct is a serious issue in the United States. While the Department of Justice can conduct “Pattern and Practice” investigations into State and Local law enforcement agencies, most allegations of misconduct are investigated at the local level, either by the law enforcement agency, or by some kind of civilian oversight authority.

Identify three positive and three negatives with civilian oversight investigations of police misconduct. From your list, select what you feel is the most important positive and the most important negative issue with civilian oversight. Describe each in detail, and explain why you feel this is the most significant positive issue and the most significant negative issue.

Offender rehabilitation treatments

Write an assignment on strategies for classifying and treating offenders based on the seven types of offender rehabilitation treatments, as follows:

Psychological
Behavior
Social
Educational/vocational
Substance abuse
Sex offender
Religious
How should offenders and treatment needs be determined and classified?

These programs have been proven to assist numerous offender populations, but there are no clear guidelines that address how or when they should be implemented within correctional institutions. In this assignment, select 3 types of rehabilitative treatments to analyze and discuss.

Assignment Guidelines

Select 3 of the rehabilitative treatment types from the list above.
The name and purpose of each selected rehabilitative treatment
The scope of the treatments
What conditions or problems do the programs aim to treat?
What are the limitations of the programs?
What type(s) of offenders should be treated?
How you classify offenders and treatment needs?
The effectiveness of the programs within your rehabilitative treatment categories
What types of offenders are ideal candidates for these types of treatments?
Be sure to use examples to support your explanation.
discuss the impact that one of your selected rehabilitative treatments has had on the field of corrections and society’s view of offender rehabilitation within the last 10 years.

Correctional settings across America

In correctional settings across America, the risk-need-responsivity (RNR) model is actively used to assess offender security and programmatic needs. James (2018) discussed the Risk and Needs Assessment in the Federal Prison System in great detail. Please read this article using the following link: https://fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/R44087.pdf. Along with his research, as well as the information presented within the textbook, discuss your opinion of the following:

Considering the eight central risk and needs factors of offenders, use a real-life example (either someone personally known to you or someone that you read about in the news) to discuss whether or not risk and needs assessments should be incorporated into sentencing.
If you believe that it should be considered when determining an offender’s sentence, describe how the eight central risk and needs assessments could be useful.
How would that be useful to the offender?
To the criminal justice system?
And to society at large?
If you believe that it should not be included, discuss why incorporating the eight central risk and needs assessments into sentencing would not help the criminal justice system.
How would it harm the offender?
The criminal justice system?
And society at large?
