“mandatory release” and “supervised release”

Explain how “mandatory release” and “supervised release” relate to social justice and criminal justice objectives.
Discuss institutional goals that may be met by releasing incarcerated persons early to serve their remaining sentences within society.
It has been argued that privatizing corrections—paying private companies to efficiently run prisons and jails—would save the government money. Discuss pros and cons for privatizing corrections. In addition, relate the pros and cons of privatization to at least one issue for the future of corrections.
Support your claims with examples from any required material or other scholarly resources and properly cite any references.

Community corrections

The textbook provides several examples of community corrections as a means of reintegrating formerly incarcerated persons into communities. Explain how reintegration after a term of incarceration relates to social justice and criminal justice objectives. In addition, give an example of a community corrections effort whose aim is assisting with reintegration.

A digital presentation detailing roles and issues for corrections officials in public and private institutions

For this assignment, you will prepare a digital presentation (PowerPoint or equivalent) detailing roles and issues for corrections officials in public and private institutions. One of the goals for this assignment is to provide an opportunity for you to organize and summarize elements connected with functions and issues in corrections. Effectively summarizing and presenting information in a digital format can apply to many contexts. Your slides will consider issues for correctional officers in social justice and criminal justice contexts. Please address each of the following:

Explain the corrections officer’s place within the social roles of incarcerated persons.
For this part, you may wish to consider assigned material in your textbook.
Examine the role of corrections officers within jails and prison administrations for public institutions.
Be sure to address roles in both jail and prison contexts.
Compare and contrast issues for correctional officers in public institutions and private institutions.
For this part, you may wish to consider content in Chapter 10 of your textbook. You may also wish to review some of the recommended resources for this week that address privatizing corrections.

The treatment plans currently being used in correctional facilities.

Describe the treatment plans currently being used in correctional facilities. How effective are these treatment plans? Are there waiting lists? Can offenders effectively be treated for their various issues if they don’t want the help? Be sure to support your position with evidence and cite at least two external sources.

The use of probation

You work in a probation office in your city. Your supervisor approaches you to work on a project to explain the system of probation to new probationers. Create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation explaining the processes that the probationer will go through from the beginning of the probation sentence to the end of the probation. This presentation should also explain the necessity of each step from the viewpoint of a probation officer and should cover the following topics:

The use of probation and the typical types of crimes that result in a sentence of probation
The use of the presentence investigation report (PSIR) in probation
Appointments with a probationer—from the first meeting to the last meeting
The use of treatment and counseling during probation
The way infractions of the probationer are handled
The purpose probation hopes to accomplish through the program
Use generic terms in your presentation because each probationer is handled as per his or her situation and crime. The presentation would be made to a new probationer and to any family members during the first meeting. Emphasize what the probationer needs to do to ensure that probation is completed successfully with regard to the above topics.

Tyler Johnson, an inmate at State Correctional Center

You are a correctional manager at State Correctional Center. Tyler Johnson, an inmate at State Correctional Center, wants to control where he is housed.

Every time he is placed in a housing unit he doesn’t like, Johnson alleges that he’s going to commit suicide. This actions forces correctional staff to follow policy and place Johnson back in a close supervision unit, where he will remain on constant watch.

While Johnson is housed in this unit, he informs mental health staff members that he had no plans to commit suicide and was only attempting to control where he was housed. Staff in the mental health unit then inform you in administration of the facility, that Johnson is merely ‘playing the system;’ but abiding by policy, Johnson is moved again to another housing unit.

Custody staff informs you that a trend has been started, and that if they continue to entertain this inmate’s apparent whims, other inmates may also begin to follow in his footsteps. The question custody staff has started asking facility administration is what should they do to prevent a number of inmates from claiming they will kill themselves in order to control where they are housed?

Answer the following question fully and completely (one to two paragraphs) in this written assignment:

What should you, as a correctional supervisor, tell your staff to do in this sort of situation?
