Victim impact statement

According to the National Center for Victims of Crime (2012), a victim impact statement, now allowed in all 50 states, provides victims with a way to explain how a crime has impacted their lives. This information can then be used by a judge “to help determine an offender’s sentence” or by a parole board to determine parole. In this Discussion, you will locate and analyze a victim impact statement.

To prepare:
Search the Internet and locate a victim impact statement (video or written).
Reflect on the background and relevant facts of the case for which the statement was prepared.

In a minimum of 300 words, briefly describe the background of the case, including:

Criminals involved
Victims involved
Crime committed
Apparent impacts
Other relevant information to provide context

The relationship between victimization and offending

First, explain to the class the relationship between victimization and offending (section II), making certain to draw support from the readings for your explanation. Then, you will need to conduct a 20-30 minute internet investigation and locate an empirical research article focused on female offenders or female victims. Summarize the article and present the major findings to the class.

Transnational crimes.

For this week’s assignment, you will examine the global criminal perspective of two types of transnational crimes. Chapter 2 in the text discusses domestic crime, transnational crime, and justice. Find additional credible sources to assist in your evaluation of international policing and investigative agencies’ attempts to locate and arrest individuals that are engaged in these transnational crimes.

Before you begin, choose two types of transnational crime from the list below:

Cybercrime
Drug trafficking
Human trafficking
Money laundering
Maritime piracy
Theft of art and cultural objects
Trade in human body parts
Terrorism
relative to the chosen two types of transnational crime

Describe what international policing and investigative agencies are doing well.
Identify areas in need of improvements.
Discuss what we as individuals can do to help with transnational crime rates.
Identify some warning signs that these transnational crimes may be taking place around us.
Evaluate what the United States has done to improve transnational crime rates.
Identify which national agencies are involved in the United States’ attempt to manage transnational crime.
Discuss each agency’s role in these efforts.

Violent crimes in the US

These are common statements heard daily, but what are the facts? Crime can be broken down and measured in many different ways. There are many different types of crime, including property crimes, violent crimes, white-collar crimes, and cybercrimes. The FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program identifies violent crime as four offenses: murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. The number (incidences) of these four crimes has increased in the past decade due to population changes; however, in order to account for changing populations, the UCR uses a prevalence rate of crimes per 100,000 people. This allows for consistent reporting.

In this Discussion, you estimate the number of violent crimes that have occurred in a U.S. city, county, state, or region in the past year. You then compare your estimates to the actual numbers from the UCR.

The criminal justice system

Do you think the media (news, entertainment, etc.) helps or hurts the image of the criminal justice system (i.e., police, courts, and corrections) in the United States? In answering, be sure to briefly describe why one may argue the opposite of your answer and why your answer to this question should be considered more accurate. Be sure to include outside sources to aid you in answering this reflection.

A correctional facility that provides inmates with job skills

Using the National Institute of Justice website, research and identify a program within a correctional facility that provides inmates with job skills and/or training.
Consider whether the program is effective.

Post the program you identified. Explain two ways inmates have transitioned back into society positively because of the training and/or skills acquired through the program. Alternatively, explain two ways in which the program fails to transition inmates back into society.

The use of social media to collect evidence of criminal

Imagine that you have been hired as an expert witness by either the prosecution or defense in a Supreme Court case. In this role, you are to provide testimony on whether, in your expert opinion, the use of social media to collect evidence of criminal wrongdoing is fair and legally reasonable.
First, you will choose a specific recent case to focus on

Begin by explaining the social media case you have chosen to act as an expert witness in, in a few sentences.
Explain which side you are representing on whether the use of social media to collect evidence of criminal wrongdoing is fair and legally reasonable.
State your opinion based on your analysis, and defend your analysis with references to scholarly resources, journal articles, or other legal sources.
Be sure to focus on the specific methods the police used to obtain the evidence via social media in the case you selected and how the evidence was used in the course of the investigation (e.g., to further it, to conclude it, to arrest, etc.).
Finish with a conclusion that contains a compelling statement or statements for the court to consider.
