Maximizing Your Criminal Justice Program Experience at AIU

What might have helped you in the beginning of your Criminal Justice program that you wish you had known earlier?
What are your plans after graduation?
Based on your studies, have you selected a career that meets your future aspirations, plans and goals?
How well do you think this program prepared you for your next career step or career move?
Have you submitted applications or selected an initial occupation?
What type of agency are you interested in as your first choice?
Have you considered continuing your education in a graduate program?
If you have selected a graduate program of study, what is the specialty?
Have you determined a longer-range career plan that is beyond your entry-level position in Criminal Justice?
Are you already employed in a Criminal Justice occupation (or a related occupational field) – and if so, why did you choose to get a degree?
What is one piece of advice that you would pass on to new Criminal Justice students that will help them to make the most of their time at AIU to help them graduate?

Trace evidence

Trace evidence consists of small items of material largely made up of human and animal hair, cloth fibers (natural and synthetic), items such as geological soil, small glass particles, pollen, wood splinters, gunshot residue, and small smears or flecks of paint. These items are found throughout many crime scenes and are often overlooked or lost.
Explain to your CSI partner in training the methods of finding trace evidence, cautions on not losing or destroying it, and collection methods.
Relate to your partner the components of human hair that are considered class characteristics.
Further, explain how the Locard Principle plays a major part in the transfer of trace evidence and the importance of identifying and collecting it for the investigation.

Crime scene reconstruction

Crime scene reconstruction depends largely on the efficacy of the crime scene process and the accuracy of data (measurements, angles, location of evidence, condition of evidence, weather at the time of crime, and lighting at the time of the crime. The crime scene investigators must be certain that if required they could return to the scene where the crime occurred and recreate the scene or construct a facsimile of the crime scene as it was when it was first encountered. Inaccuracies or mistaken interpretation may result in a reconstruction that does not hold true to the actual crime scene when it occurred. Personnel necessary for the reconstruction may have a special training certification to participate in the reconstruction for example shooting scene reconstruction analyst or blood spatter pattern analyst.

Focus your discussion on the following:

In crime scene logic processes both inductive and deductive reasoning is utilized. Explain the difference between the two methods and their application to the crime scene protocol.
Name 2 major limitations of crime scene reconstruction.
Name and explain the 3 kinds of crime scene fingerprints.
Fingerprints are one of the mainstays for crime scene processing. There are a number of methods for obtaining fingerprints from a scene. Explain main process used known as ‘dusting’ and how the print is recovered

Offender rehabilitation efforts

Offender rehabilitation efforts is a major focus for researchers and professionals within the field of corrections. Offender treatment plans are necessary for effective rehabilitation to take place for incarcerated offenders and those under community supervision. More specifically, women’s completion rates of general offending rehabilitation programs tend to be significantly lower than their male counterparts. Does this have something to do with the way rehabilitation programs are designed and for whom they are designed? Read Martin, Grautt, and Gelthorpe’s (2009) article entitled, What Works for Women: A Comparison of Community Based General Offending Programme Completion.

Within this article Martin et al. (2009) discuss what criminogenic factors from the OASys risk-assessment tool identify the features predicting compliance that allow for successful completion for women in rehabilitation programs. As mentioned in Chapter 5 of the course textbook, “according to the principle of criminogenic needs, interventions must target those offender problems or features that contribute to or are supportive of offending. In other words, the intervention should reduce reoffending.”

After reading Martin, Grautt, and Gelthorpe’s (2009) article entitled, What Works for Women: A Comparison of Community Based General Offending Programme Completion., discuss what criminogenic needs were identified as being necessary in the results for women to successfully complete rehabilitation programs.
Do you think there were any factors mentioned in the article that are impossible to meet? Based on your experience and/or other readings, are there any criminogenic factors for women that aren’t identified in this article that could be a possibility.

Law Agencies

What different kinds of law enforcement agencies exist in the United States today and what role does each agency have in enforcing the law? What problems, if any, do you think are created by such a diversity of agencies?
