Chapter 1 addresses this issue beginning on p.11 and a synopsis of Herbert Packer’s crime control/due process models of criminal justice are provided in Figure 1-2. The Classical School of Thought has Influenced Criminal Justice Practices the Most

One of the central ideas from the classical school of thought is that people choose to commit crimes, and to prevent them from doing that, we need to make better laws that provide a greater sense of deterrence. The positivist school of thought suggests that there are scientific explanations that cause people to commit crimes. Both schools of thought have led to significant changes in criminal justice practices. Which school of thought do you believe has influenced criminal justice practices the most?

Take a position. Do you believe the classical school of thought or the positivist school of thought has had the most influence on criminal justice practices?

Leaders in criminal justice must remain up to date on administrative practices at the local, state, and federal levels. Each level and branch of criminal justice involves different administrative processes and considerations depending on the issue and the needs of the agency and the public.
Imagine that you are a team leader at an agency and have been asked to address the administration of a particular issue in criminal justice. You will investigate the issue and the administrative practices being used. As the team’s leader, determine the agency’s administrative response to such cases going forward. For this assessment, you will prepare a directive to share with your team on best practices in administration for the chosen issue.
Select one of the following criminal justice specializations at the federal, state, or local level as your focus for this assessment:
• Community policing and law enforcement practices
• De-escalation and use of force
• Detention conditions
• Alternatives to incarceration
• Parole and probation
• Rehabilitation and reintegration
• Cybercrime
• Juvenile justice

One of the course’s themes has been the contrast of commercial leadership and criminal justice leadership. In some ways, the tactics and challenges of the two realms are comparable, yet there are significant contrasts.

For this project, you will contrast the roles of a police chief with a company CEO.

What are the similarities and differences between a company executive’s and a police chief’s leadership styles? Refer back to the characteristics discussed earlier in the course.
