The Healing Power of Animals: Animal Assisted Therapy in the Prison Setting

Research has shown that Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) programs within the prison system can be useful tools for incarcerated populations. Evidence from several studies indicate that inmates gain “life enhancing skills”, and are “able to enhance coping skills” to cater to an animal’s emotional and social needs in AAT approaches.  General SEL programs also provide needed tools in emotion management, social competence, problem-solving, and other important areas.

Your task is to devise a brief lit review related to AAT (Animal Assisted Therapy) for Rikers Rovers. Provide at least 8 references which must include among them:
Three journal articles
One book
Two research or policy-focused articles written within the last 5 years (sources may include:  National Institute of Justice, Brookings Institute, Vera Institute of Justice, Center for Court Innovation, Prison Policy Institute, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Legal Action Center, Drug Policy Alliance, New York Academy of Medicine, etc.)

Peer Reviewed Publication

Read and watch the following resources from the University Library to prepare for this discussion:
“Peer Reviewed Publication”
“What is a Peer-Reviewed Journal?”
“How Do I Locate a Peer-Reviewed Journal?”
After a researcher has completed a research study, they will likely publish a report so professionals in the field can benefit from their findings. Before a report is widely available to the public, a scholarly evaluation of the research is conducted through a peer-review process.
Reflect on the peer-review process and why it is highly valued in the scientific community as you discuss the following with the class:
What is the peer-review process and what is its significance in the publishing phase of a research study?
Why should the public care if a research study has been peer reviewed?
Why is it important for students like you to reference peer-reviewed journals when completing assignments in an academic program?
This week you learned about various types of statistical tests. What are the benefits of having peer reviewers evaluate the results of statistical tests in a research study?
How might referencing peer-reviewed journals help you in your criminal justice career?

Prison Conditions

Reflect on gender diversity in prison populations and how federal policies have impacted sexual violence in corrections.
Prompt
In a speech presented at the NAACP Conference in 2015, former President Barack Obama stated, “We should not tolerate conditions in prison that have no place in any civilized country.” Now that you’ve reviewed the resources for this module, you have a better understanding of the impact of gender diversity on prison populations and how federal policies have impacted sexual violence in corrections. In this 150- to 300-word journal, address the following:
What prison conditions might President Obama have been referring to?
How might these prison conditions contribute to sexual violence in prisons? Consider the differences for men, women, and persons who identify as LGBTQ in your response.
Which federal policies have been created in an effort to improve prison conditions?
How might these federal policies help to improve prison conditions? Consider the impact of these policies for men, women, and persons who identify as LGBTQ.
Specifically, the following rubric criteria must be addressed:
Identify the prison conditions referred to by President Obama.
Explain how these conditions may contribute to sexual violence in prisons (for men, women, and persons who identify as LGBTQ).
Identify federal policies that have been created to address the prison conditions identified above.
Explain how these federal policies can help to alleviate these prison conditions.
