‘Identification of Dilemma’

1) Name this section ‘Identification of Dilemma’ and address the following (limit to 1 page):

a. What is the overall ethical dilemma? b. Who can be impacted by the dilemma (people and/or groups)?

2) Provide a brief overview of 2 Frameworks (Approaches) to Managerial Ethics (1+ pages per framework). Name this section ‘Ethical Frameworks’. Name each sub-section after the ethical frameworks you choose.

a. Choose from: Utilitarian, Deontology, Self-Interest, Rights, Justice, Social.

b. The textbook and lecture provide general explanations for the approaches above. Expand on these with external sources. Use in-paper citations and list the additional references at the end of your paper. c. This is not copy/paste from the internet. Be sure to write this in your own words based on your research.

d. This section of your paper should not reference the case. Instead focus on what you’ve learned (researched) regarding each ethical approach.

3) Provide outcomes to this ethical dilemma (2+ pages). Name this section ‘Evaluation of Ethical Dilemma’. Address the following in this section:

a. Based on what you’ve learned about the case, which framework (from the two you’ve explained in the previous section) do you believe will guide you in this situation? Explain why you will go this direction.

b. What are the implications of this decision (who does it benefit? What are the positive implications? What are the negative implications?)

c. If you had been guided by the other framework addressed in section 2, what would have been the positive and negative implications?

d. There’s no right/wrong answer choice, so I won’t grade this on your ability to choose a particular ethical framework. Instead, I’m more concerned with your ability to describe why you chose the approach and what happens next based on the approach. These will help me assess whether or not you understand the concepts.

e. No need for additional outside resources in this section, as you should refer to the case and the information provided from section 2.

Understanding the four conflict styles and applying techniques for conflict resolution

In one paragraph, describe why you believe understanding the four conflict styles and applying techniques for conflict resolution are critical to effective communication. What do they teach us about ourselves and about others in our groups?
Then, for each of the four conflict styles (passive, aggressive, passive-aggressive, and assertive) complete the table with the following:
Using your own words, define the common characteristics of this conflict style.
Describe one example of how this conflict style can positively impact communication in group settings.
Describe one example of how this conflict style can negatively impact communication in group settings.

Managing Conflict

After studying Lessons 13. 1 and 13.2, you’ll want to prepare for this assignment by carefully thinking about how you “view” conflict. Is it a “necessary evil”? Do you see it as something you’d rather “run from” or do you relish a “good fight”?

How do you approach a conflicting situation? Do you try to avoid it at all costs? Do you “come out swinging” with the attitude of “it’s my way or the highway”? Do you try to “accommodate” and “play nice” in most challenging scenarios?

You see, we often react to conflict or “deal with it” based on how we visualize it. So, take some time here to develop your perspective of “conflict”. Ask yourself, “how do I view conflict”? Can you distill your view to a single metaphoric statement?

If you’re not familiar with metaphor as a figure of speech, think about it as taking an abstract object or action and comparing it to a concrete concept, action, or object in order to clarify or better understand the first abstract thought or notion. You see, we want to clarify or identify hidden similarities between the two.

Basically, when we compare the abstract thought to a more concrete thought we understand it better…. we get a better grasp of the meaning. A metaphor however is not a definition it’s figurative language and it’s often quite eloquent and theatrical. For example, the phrase

“The eyes are the windows of the soul”

is an expressive and eloquent way to say that an individual’s eyes can help us see who they are as human beings. We can see a person’s emotional state or character by looking deep into their eyes. The eyes are not literally windows, but if you take the time to listen and look at someone deeply in conversation you may find out the essence of who they are as a human being. Another way to think of it could be “Kayla’s eyes are the windows of her soul.” We can see Kayla’s emotional state by looking into her expressive eyes.
