Rules governing the investment practices Ethics Cases

Rules governing the investment practices of individual certified public accountants prohibit them from investing in the stock of a company that their firm audits. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) became concerned that some accountants were violating this rule. In response to an SEC investigation, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) fired 10 people and spent $25 million educating employees about the investment rules and installing an investment tracking system.

Instructions

Answer the following questions.

a. Why do you think rules exist that restrict auditors from investing in companies that are audited by their firms?

b. Some accountants argue that they should be allowed to invest in a company’s stock as long as they themselves aren’t involved in working on the company’s audit or consulting. What do you think of this idea?

c. Today, a very high percentage of publicly traded companies are audited by only four very large public accounting firms. These firms also do a high percentage of the consulting work that is done for publicly traded companies. How does this fact complicate the decision regarding whether CPAs should be allowed to invest in companies audited by their firm?

d. Suppose you were a CPA and you had invested in IBM when IBM was not one of your firm’s clients. Two years later, after IBM’s stock price had fallen considerably, your firm won the IBM audit contract. You will be involved in working with the IBM audit. You know that your firm’s rules require that you sell your shares immediately. If you do sell immediately, you will sustain a large loss. Do you think this is fair? What would you do?

e. Why do you think PwC took such extreme steps in response to the SEC investigation?

DIVERSITY CHALLENGES AND REFLECTIONS

Couples and family counseling often involves understanding and integrating diverse influences on the system’s presenting issues, as well as ongoing wellness and development of the system. Counselors must be aware not only of these influences, but also the manner in which they may impact the system members—differing degrees, perceptions, and meaning. In addition, the intersection of multiple diversity issues can create another layer of challenges for couples and families.
Familiarizing yourself with multicultural standards of practice is a first step in developing cultural competencies, as is exploring your own thoughts and beliefs regarding diversity. For this Assignment, you consider a point in your life when your family was touched by diversity, discuss how it affected your family, and how such an issue might be handled in a counseling session.

• What impact did this time have on your family?
• Hypothetically, if you addressed the issue in a family counseling session, what do you think the counselor should know and explore with your family to fully address the issue?
• How will you be sensitive to the impact diversity has on families and couples in your own professional practice?

Glycoproteins, glycosylation & Cancer

This week you learned about the importance of glycoproteins, glycosylation and the “sugar code” and its importance for many important cellular processes, ranging from cell-cell interaction, immune function and cancer. You heard that the extracellular carbohydrate coat, called glycocalyx, plays a role in tumor formation and progression. As you work on this assignment, consider that approximately half of all human proteins known to date are glycosylated and the majority cancer biomarkers are comprised of glycoproteins. About 270,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. per year and 6.9% of all cancer related deaths will result from breast cancer. Also consider that the human receptor tyrosine-protein kinase erbB-2 (HER2), one of the proteins found mutated in many breast cancer patients, has multiple sites of N-glycosylation important for its biological function.

This week I want you to read the following scientific review article:
Scott D.A. & Drake R.R. Glycosylation and its implication in breast cancer. Exp. Rev. Proteomics. 2019 Aug.; 16(8): 665-680) and also do some additional literature research on NCBI PubMed (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/) on this week’s topic.
Then discuss the following aspects with your class mates:

Is there scientific evidence showing a role of glycosylation in tumor development and/or metastasis?
Which enzymes important for glycosylation are discussed to play a role in tumorigenesis, particularly in breast cancer?
Which sugar residues and “glyco-antigens” are discussed to play a role in tumorigenesis, particularly in breast cancer?
What are the diagnostic methods used to detect alterations in glycosylation patterns amongst normal cell and tumor cells?
What is meant by the term “sugar code”?
What are the challenges in the field of glyco-biology?
Be sure to include all references at the end of your initial posting to receive full credit. These posts need to be a couple of paragraphs and should not exceed a page (minimum of 250 words required for full credit of original post).

Review the three case studies and choose one for the Discussion.

• Explain how cultural and socioeconomic status may affect the transition to adulthood featured in your chosen case study.
• Describe two practice skills you could apply when working with the individuals and families in your chosen case study.

Respond to two colleagues:
• Describe an additional strategy each colleague can use to assist working with the individuals and families in the chosen case study.
• Recommend types of supports or resources each colleague could apply with the individuals and families from the chosen case study now or in the future.

• Explain how cultural and socioeconomic status may affect the transition to adulthood featured in your chosen case study.
“From a psychosocial perspective, young adulthood is the period seen as a time of progressive movement out of an individualized and egocentric sense of self and into greater connection with significant others” (Hutchison, 2018, pg. 235). When this stage is not completed with support and guidance young adults often find themselves feeling alone and alienated. Caroline Sanders is a transgender 23-year-old woman. She received a gender confirmation surgery three months ago and fully identifies as a woman to her family and friends. As a teenager Caroline confided in her family about her gender identity journey and denied acceptance or support. She spent most of her life being bullied in her conservative Northern Virginia town. Her parents forced her to go to therapy and insisted to the therapist that they must fix Caroline. She currently has no relationship with her parents or siblings. “Emotional maltreatment in childhood has been shown to increase depersonalization symptomology, such as emotional numbing and detachment, which is associated with poor psychological functioning in adulthood” (Hutchison, 2018, pg. 252). Caroline’s parent’s detachment and estrangement negatively affected her sense of wellbeing. “Family acceptance of an LGBTQ adolescent is a significant predictor of positive outcomes during the transition to young adulthood” (Hutchison, 2018, pg. 256). Caroline overcame risk factors and beat the odds having an unsupportive family. She stayed true to her identity and found support in her workplace as a young adult. Her HR department was supportive and informative of proper procedures. This finally allowed Caroline to develop a sense of stability and confidence.

Inventing Lines That Divide

Watch both Video OLL carefully and take notes as you watch.
Use the information from these videos to complete the form. In particular, you need to identify the factors leading to these categories’ invention and also to their ideological justifications.

Forensic Anthropology

Now that you have been introduced to the sub-discipline of Archeology in Chapters 6 and 7 of your textbook, you can now witness a case of archaeological investigation to determine the lifeway and cause of death of the oldest mummy ever discovered, Ötzi, or the Iceman as he is more commonly known. For those of you interested in Forensic Anthropology, identifying the remains of deceased humans, this video: PBS Nova – Iceman Murder Mystery Documentary will be right up your alley. You might want to eat before watching the video!

Instructions:

When you are done watching the video answer the following questions by referring to specific information from the video, NOT other sources:
What was the archaeological context (see term in book) in which the Iceman was found, and how did this impact his preservation?
What subsistence strategy did the Iceman pursue and what evidence (physical, genetic, etc.) was used to determine this?
How do you think the Iceman was murdered (e.g. premeditated or accidental)? Support your opinion with evidence!

Anthropology Of Language And Communication

As we are learning, language changes over time as culture changes. After conducting a bit of your own research, please discuss some examples of English words that have disappeared or are no longer in fashion. Provide the definitions of the words, as well. What have they been replaced with today? Using the course resources this week, why do you think these words have been replaced or are no longer part of our common vernacular?
