Basic Biostatistics: Statistics for Public Health Practice

In this module, you have learned about two of the most frequently used probability distributions in biostatistics: the binomial and normal distributions. The binomial distribution and the normal distribution are similar in several ways. In fact, under certain conditions, the normal distribution is used to approximate the binomial. For your initial post, discuss the following three questions. Provide examples of data that follow each distribution to help illustrate your points.

What are the basic differences between the two distributions?
Under what circumstances do you think it works well to approximate the binomial using the normal, considering the differences?
Under what public health or medical circumstances would it be helpful to identify the probability of an event? Provide some real-life examples.

Community change

Consider a change that would benefit your community. It could be adding a community center, enhancing the county library, adding services, or any other beneficial change. You have been asked to present a proposal for this change to the city council. In your proposal, you must explain the financial and non-financial benefits of the change to motivate the city council/supervisor to approve your proposal.

Create a 10- to 11 slide Microsoft PowerPoint presentation of your proposal in which you:
Explain your proposal.
Why is this change important or necessary for the community?
What problem(s) will be addressed by the change?
What are the major elements of the proposal?
What is the desired outcome of the proposal?
Describe key factors (steps, processes, people) required to implement the change.
Who and/or what is required for the successful execution of your proposal?
Are there any potential partners and/or stakeholders involved? What role might they play in developing or implementing your ideas?
What potential challenges or obstacles should be addressed before implementing the change?
Explain the financial benefits of the change.
Explain the non-financial benefits of the change.
Conclude the presentation with a statement that will motivate the city council to approve.

Albert Albert Mitchell

Read the following case study and answer the reflective questions. Please provide evidence-based rationales for your answers. APA, 7th ed. must be followed.

Albert Albert Mitchell is a 36-year-old man who will be traveling to Dubai to give a business presentation in 3 months. Although he has traveled widely in the United States as a consultant, this is his first trip to the Middle East.

He requests information regarding immunizations needed before his trip. Albert states that as he will be in Dubai for only a few days, he is unlikely to contract a disease in such a short time and therefore believes that it is illogical to obtain immunizations.

Albert states that he has heard that the side effects of the immunizations might be worse than the diseases they prevent. He is also concerned about leaving his wife at home alone because she is 6 months pregnant.

Reflective Questions

How would you address Albert’s beliefs?

What learning would be needed in each domain?

What learning theories would you consider?

How might his family concerns be addressed?

Exclusionary rule

What is the exclusionary rule and what are the major objectives of the rule? Is the exclusionary rule expressly provided in the US Constitution? Offer detailed argument both for and against the exclusionary rule. Which one of the two positions helps decrease crime and why? DOES THE EXCLUSIONARY RULE DETER POLICE MISCONDUCT?

Build Your Knowledge Area

Watching the summary videos in the Build Your Knowledge Area- again discuss what you found most intriguing in the chapters and the video.
You might consider talking about anything you learned about woodblock printing or etching or other printing techniques.
You might look further into the extraordinary art of Albrecht Durer and discuss your finds.
You might consider Martin Luther and the effect of the printing press on Christianity.
And/or you might discuss anything you found interesting about the development of fonts, font families, and the wide variety in typesetting in different countries. These aren’t questions as much as potential topics if you need a prompt.

Consistent rates of inflation over the past several decades in healthcare

People have seen consistent rates of inflation over the past several decades in healthcare. This inflation has been driven by increases in costs for health insurance, technology utilization, and demand for qualified providers and facilities. Consider the many areas in which the U.S. healthcare system has seen steady rises in costs. Imagine you are a financial manager for an organization that has seen significant cost increases in the past few years or decades in an area related to your organization (e.g., supplies, technology, outside services). Prepare an outline for a proposal on how to help reduce or minimize these costs.Use your text as a resource for this assignment plus one other resource from the library. Please cite your sources. The outline should include the following:

Cost that is being looked at
History of increases
Potential future increases
1–2 suggestions for improvement or change
