Texas county governments

Explore and evaluate Texas county governments. Let’s learn
what counties do, what form of government they have, and who represents you at the
county level. There are numerous county officials that we elect. You will learn who
represents you in the offices of county sheriff, county tax collector, district attorney, and
county clerk. In addition, you will learn who represents you on the Commissioners
Court. Of all the positions we elect in the county, you will determine which one you
believe to be the most significant. You will need to research the county in which you
live. It is again time to see what you think.
You may want to first explore the optional documents below to help with your
research. Once you have done the research, answer the following topics within your
paper.
The Questions:
1. In which county do you live? Who serves on the Commissioners Court in your
county? Who represents you on the Commissioners Court?
2. In your own words, explain the duties of the commissioners court, the county
tax collector, the county clerk, the district attorney, and the county sheriff.
Who holds each position in your county?
3. Of all the county officials you have researched and identified, which one do
you believe to be the most significant and why?

Facione & Gittens

Facione & Gittens (2016) state, “Strong critical thinking about complex and difficult
social policies demands that we respect those with whom we disagree” (p. 344). The
authors of your text ask us to take seriously the points of view of those with whom we
disagree.
• Should I respect the point of view of a misogynist – a person who dislikes,
despises, or is strongly prejudiced against women?
• Should I respect the point of view of a racist?
• How about someone who believes marriage is only between one man and one
woman?
• How about someone who does not believe that humans are contributing to the
conditions that cause climate change?
• How about someone who denies that the Holocaust occurred?

Ethical philosophy statement

Some people believe that you can tell who a person is by what they do when no one is looking. Let’s look at the following case. John Doe, a nurse, has downloaded an application to her phone that allows him to download copyrighted textbooks for a nursing course (that Doe is going to take) without his Internet Service Provider knowing it. The application is called “Cloak” as in cloak of invisibility (a hooded coat one wears to make it so others cannot see you). The application disguises his phone and makes it so the information on it is inaccessible. John is aware that other people who are of a lower socio-economic status (like him) also use this software program for the same reason (and to save money). John Doe knows that his religion forbids him from using this application to download in this manner. John Doe is focused on his own economic situation and does not consider the publisher, author, and others involved in the books. Think about a course of social action; what social values should be used to address this moral issue and conflict.

Create a personal ethical philosophy and explain from which philosophy or philosophies (it must include at least one of the following: virtue ethics, Kantian ethics, utilitarianism, virtue ethics, or social contract ethics) you created it and why the contents are important and meaningful for you. List its precepts.

Take your personal ethical philosophy statement and use it to work through John Doe’s case. What is moral and immoral per your theory?
How would the veil of ignorance or a different theory of justice address John Doe’s case?

Applications of artificial intelligence and expert systems

Find applications of artificial intelligence and expert systems. Identify an organization with which at

least one member of your group has a good contact who has a decision-making problem that requires some expertise (but is not too complicated). Understand the nature of its business and identify problems that have been supported or can potentially be supported by intelligent systems. Some

examples include selection of suppliers, selection of new employee, job assignments computer

selection, market-contact method selection, and determining admission to graduate school.

Erdrich’s novel The Round House

Write a short (1200-1800 word, approx. 4-6 page), critical analysis that focuses on either Louise
Erdrich’s novel The Round House or one or two poems from When the Light of the World Was
Subdued Our Songs Came Through: a Norton Anthology of Native Nations Poetry. If you choose
two poems, you will need to write a comparative analysis.
