Edward Case Study

Case Study: A 68-year-old male man named Edward went to the hospital for a routine gall bladder surgery. The surgery proceeded without complications. Due to Edwards age and his type II diabetes, he was admitted overnight for monitoring and discharged approximately 24 hours later. Edward returned to the hospital several days later with a cough resulting in chest pain, shortness of breath and a fever over 101 degrees. The attending doctor noticed the presence of small bloody chunks in his sputum and sent Edward for a chest X-ray. The X-ray results showed lung infiltrate with the presence of a bulging fissure. The sputum sample was then sent off for Gram stain analysis which showed a large presence of a Gram-negative bacillus-shaped microorganisms.

Based on the information presented in the case study, answer the following questions in your paper (see guidelines below for additional info):

What disease/illness is this patient suffering from and what microorganism is to blame for this illness (provide the full microbial name)? Provide background information on this organism, history, morphology, virulence factors, toxins, etc…
What information from the patient’s symptoms contributed to your decision? What information from the patient’s history, symptoms and/or lab samples contributed to your diagnosis? Support your answers with factual evidence and logical reasoning. Identify at least one other logical possible microbial cause of this disease and explain how this was ruled out.
What is the epidemiology of this disease? Identify risk factors for this disease and describe the disease course/outcome in humans.
What steps can be taken to treat the illness? How and why are the treatments effective (or ineffective)? Are there any concerns or other complications of this disease?

Concierge Practice Of Medicine

You work for a marketing department in a hospital within a suburban location of a large metropolitan area. Though it neighbors million-dollar homes, the hospital’s mission includes providing care to underserved and indigent populations in the area.
A new primary care physician moved into the area and approached your hospital to partner with her as she begins a new practice in the community. Because the administration is always anxious to welcome new practitioners to the hospital, you agree to meet with the physician. During the meeting, the physician explains that she wants to establish the first concierge medical practice in the community. The physician plans to attract around 100 families to her practice, and she plans to charge from $300 to $1,000 per month, depending on the size of the family unit. (Note: A goal of 100 families may not be realistic; however, the number makes for easier calculations.)

The patients who join the concierge practice will receive access to the physician’s services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at an office located near the hospital. Families will receive preventive care services, and the physician will design wellness programs to encourage healthy lifestyles for her patients. The physician will use the hospital for all emergent care, day surgeries, rehabilitation, and in-patient care. The physician also plans to use nutritionists and the hospital’s fitness center facilities.

Assignment Instructions: Write a 5-page paper in APA format (not including the cover page and reference page) addressing the following points:

Discuss some of the goods or services that could be highlighted in a marketing campaign that involves a concierge practice of medicine.
What advantages do you think a concierge practice of medicine might contribute to the hospital’s offerings of products to the community?
Discuss some of the issues and challenges that may arise from the hospital sponsoring a concierge practice of medicine.?

Case Study: Statistical Inference

The research department of an appliance manufacturing firm has developed a new bimetallic thermal sensor for its toaster. The new bimetallic thermal sensor can sense the temperature of the bread and move the lever arm to activate the switch. The research department claims that the new bimetallic thermal sensor will reduce appliance returns under the one-year full warranty by 2%-6%. To determine if the claim can be supported, the testing department selects a group of the toasters manufactured with the new bimetallic thermal sensor and a group with the old thermal sensor and subjects them to a normal year’s worth of wear. Out of 250 toasters tested with the new bimetallic thermal sensor, 8 would have been returned. Seventeen would have been returned out of the 250 toasters with the old thermal sensor. As the manager of the appliance manufacturing process, use a statistical procedure to verify or refute the research department’s claim.

Instructions
Create 8-10 slides, including a cover and a sources list, for a presentation to the director of the manufacturing plant in which you:

Summarize the problem with the appliance manufacturing firm’s toaster.

Using Excel:
Develop a flowchart for the proposed statistical inference, including specific steps.
Compute all statistical calculations.
Place your flowchart in a slide.
