Mass media and public imagination.

Discuss the ways in which certain ‘communities’ (be they communities of people or geographic communities – or both) are criminalized and subsequently represented in the mass media and public imagination. Your task in this essay is to review select literature, take a position and link it to the course material using examples from Toronto/Canada and Toronto/Canadian media coverage to illustrate your arguments.

Ethical issue associated with the practice of nursing

Will is a 68-year-old male with a history of hypertension. Eight months ago, he started regular dialysis therapy for ESRD. Before that, his physician was closely monitoring his condition because he had polyuria and nocturia. Soon it became difficult to manage his hypertension. He also lost his appetite, became weak, easily fatigued, and had edema around his ankles. Will debated with his physician about starting dialysis, but she insisted, before the signs and symptoms of uremia increased, the treatment was absolutely necessary (Chapter 34, Learning Objectives 1 to 4).

What is the difference between azotemia and uremia?
Two years ago, Will’s physician told him to decrease his protein intake. In spite of what the physician ordered, Will could not stop having chicken, beef, pork, or eggs at least once a day. Why did his physician warn him about his diet?
Will’s feelings of weakness and fatigue are symptoms of anemia. Why is he anemic?
Knowing what you do about Will’s history, why is left ventricular dysfunction a concern for his physician?

Edmans confirmation bias causes

Edmans argues that confirmation bias causes us to believe information that confirms our point of view, which sometimes leads to accepting and sharing information that is fake, misleading, or misrepresentative. Think of an example of this from your own life. How did confirmation bias shape your understanding of an issue?
How do you think our society can move beyond confirmation bias to make sure what we’re accepting and sharing is true?
You will not be able to see posts written by your classmates until you create your initial post.

Your Response to Classmates
Replies: From Friday through Sunday of Module 4, reply to your classmates’ initial posts and engage with them in a conversation about the future of this topic. Do you think the problem of confirmation bias and misinformation is likely to get better or worse in the future? Why? Please be sure to reply to at least two of your peers’ posts.

Should the government be more or less active in the lives of citizens?

What is the appropriate balance between government and freedom in American democracy? Recall the philosophies of John Locke regarding religion, education, and violence. Do you think the government should be more active, providing assistance to achieve a common good for all citizens; or, should the government be more limited, involved only to the extent that it protects individual rights and liberties?

Mental health issues

Provide a synopsis of 2 articles in the media regarding mental health issues (see example below for specific format.) These articles must be from February 2023 and/or March 2023 and can only be from the following sources: dallasnews.com, cnn.com, foxnews.com, npr.org, nytimes.com, time.com or dailymail.com.

A synopsis is a one-paragraph summary of the article. It is a paragraph, written in proper form, stating only the main points of the article.

Only one article may be from each source.
More than one article can be about the same mental health issue or person but must be about a different subject matter.
Once I receive the same article from several students, that article will no longer be able to be used. As I receive the assignments, I will post information regarding the article(s) that can no longer be used.
Use the format below. Include 1 – The name of the article, author, date, source. 2 – The online link to the article. 3 – Synopsis of the article.
Example:

Senator John Fetterman’s hospitalization for depression has raised awareness of the condition. Our medical analyst explains what it is and how it’s treated. By Katia Hetter, March 17, 2023, www.cnn.com.

https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/17/health/depression-mental-health-fetterman-wellness/index.html

The article states that Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania is continuing to receive treatment for depression at Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, after checking himself into the hospital on February 15. Fetterman’s disclosure has prompted questions regarding depression. CNN Medical Analyst Dr. Leana Wen states that it is very common to feel down from time to time and that major depressive disorder has specific diagnostic criteria. Dr. Wen states that an estimated 21 million adults in the United States had a least one major depressive episode lasting at least 2 weeks in 2020. Dr. Wen discusses risk factors such as a recent change in life circumstances. Treatment options can include anti-depressant medications and psychotherapy. The federal government last year launched the 988 hotline that provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people experiencing emotional distress.
