David Smith, a project manager at Elite Burger, was called into an executive meeting on short notice. During the meeting, the executive team discussed the increased demand for vegetarian and vegan products in the industry. So, they decided that a new burger called the “Veggie Time Burger” will be launched in six months. They want the burger to stand out from the other similar products with fresh ingredients and new toppings. Since David has successfully launched other products in the past, he has been tasked with being the project manager for this new project.

Research & Decide. Choose and begin researching a significant quality issue. It can be anything that you believe is vital to patient safety and/or improving overall quality of care. Reliable research needs to be less than 5 years old ideally. The best research are peer-reviewed journal articles, or are written by respectable organizations and expert professionals.

Some topic examples may include:
• Hand hygiene, to include nosocomial infections driving healthcare costs
• Medication errors, to include transcription errors or staffing issues. How does fixed hospital budgets fit in?
• Patient falls, to include alarm fatigue or short hospital stays – Who pays the cost if a patient falls while in the hospital?
• Bed sores acquired in the hospital. Who pays if the patient gets a bed sore while at the hospital?
• Misdiagnosis and how that affects short and long-term patient care. How does that affect healthcare costs?
• Issues with patient identification – may tie into treatment errors and billing issues.
• Documentation quality and how it negatively affects reimbursement and drives hospital costs.
• Budget costs limiting up-to-date technology or research-based interventions from being implemented.
• Inter-departmental communication, to include nursing triage and efficient, safe decision-making. Consider if this is an effective use of time management and how it can be improved.

Hiring Practices And Ethical Responsibility

On December 12, 2022, the University of Texas’ men’s basketball coach, Chris Beard, was arrested on a family violence (i.e., felony) charge. On the same day, Coach Beard was suspended without pay by the University of Texas’ executive administrators. In a released statement, the University of Texas’ officials indicated “The university takes matters of interpersonal violence involving members of its community seriously.”

On December 23, 2022, Beard’s fiancée and alleged victim, Randi Trew, disputed the December 12th incident. “Chris did not strangle me, and I told that to law enforcement that evening. Chris has stated that he was acting in self-defense, and I do not refute that. I do not believe Chris was trying to intentionally harm me in any way.”

While an on-going investigation into this incident was being conducted by the Travis County (Texas) District Attorney’s office, on January 5, 2023, the University of Texas’ executive administrators fired Chris Beard and relieved him of the men’s basketball coaching responsibilities. Beard’s seven-year guaranteed contract with the University of Texas had five years remaining. Interestingly, Beard’s contract included a clause where he could be terminated for cause if he was charged with a felony. The University of Texas’ vice president of legal affairs, Jim Davis, informed Beard’s attorney, Perry Minton, that Beard demonstrated “unacceptable behavior that makes him unfit to serve as head coach at our university.”

On February 15, 2023, Chris Beard’s felony domestic violence case was dismissed, in part because of the alleged victim’s wishes not to prosecute. The Travis County (Texas) District Attorney’s “office determined the charges could not be proved beyond a reasonable doubt.”

On March 13, 2023, the University of Mississippi hired Chris Beard as their men’s head basketball coach.
