Assume you are an investigative reporter for a major publication (magazine or newspaper) who has been assigned to research important issues (ethnic, racial, gender, or class) that are causing problems and affecting people in a local area, workplace, or specific part of the world. Your goal is to provide both an in-depth analysis of and put a human face on this issue by writing a series of articles that the editor plans to publish in two major parts. You will write Part 1 of your series of articles, which focuses on the history, current issues, problems caused by the issues, and proposed changes.

Part 2, due in Week 8, will focus on the benefits and challenges of the proposed change(s) as well as responses to the challenges. You will include the feedback you receive on both articles from your editor/professor in your presentation due in Week 10, in which you will be required to provide a summary of your articles in a PowerPoint or Google Slide presentation for a meeting of the National Association of Journalists.
Your professor will act as your editor and provide guidance as you refine your topic area and articles.

Requirements:
Write 5–6 pages (or approximately 1,300–1,400 words) in which you:

In the first 1–2 paragraphs, introduce the topic area you chose in Week 2 with a quote, question, and/or statistic (from your credible sources), along with an overview and a thesis statement. (Grab the reader’s interest.)
Explain 3–5 major historical factors (social events/attitudes, wars, laws, economy, political environment, et cetera) in the past 50–100 years that have contributed to the current issue(s) and problems for this topic area. Explain how historical factors impact current issues.
Analyze 3–5 major current issues/problems (economic, social, political, legal, et cetera) for this topic area.
Describe 1–2 groups of people affected by the issue/problem, including 2–3 quotes and/or paraphrased comments from the people affected (from your reliable sources).
Propose 2–3 changes (economic, social, political, legal, et cetera) that could possibly improve the situation. (Changes can be proposed and extracted from examples from other countries, localities, or workplaces that you found in your reliable sources.) Burger had to make some changes in Milgram’s experiment to get his institutional review board’s permission to do it. Are those changes so significant that he can’t really claim he has replicated Milgram?

Burger says his modified experiment gives the same results as Milgram’s, showing that the Californians of the mid-2000s were just as obedient as Milgram’s New Haveners of the early 1960s. Does it give that result? How?

On pp. 3-4, Burger gives four reasons why “teachers” might go so far in shocking the “learner.” Which of the four seems most convincing to you? Least convincing? Is this the way people’s psychologies really work?

Twenge thinks Burger is misreading his own results and that the later generation is less obedient. Is she right? Why or why not?

Burger’s participants were much more ethnically diverse than Milgram’s. Does that make a difference? If so, in what ways?

Is even Burger’s milder version of the obedience experiment so upsetting (to the participants and/or in its implications for us all) that it should not have been permitted? On the other hand, could it show us such important insights about ourselves that even Milgram’s harsher version should be allowed?

Which author is more convincing, Burger or Twenge? Does one have a stronger argument? If so, what was it that convinced you in their argument? Is it just that one writes more clearly than the other?

Chief Complaint: “Panic attacks are getting worst.”
The patient is on a follow-up visit. Her psychiatric history is MDD, GAD, PTSD, and ADD. The patient reported I am having difficulty adjusting to the death of my 23 y/o son. If I had gotten up early and checked on him, he may have been alive”. The patient reported that she found her son died from an overdose of an unspecified street drug one year ago. The patient reported, “I had a nervous breakdown on my way to this appointment seems this is the town he was born and grew up. NB reported her anxiety has been very high currently. The PT rated her anxiety 10/10 on a scale of 0-10, with 10 being the worst anxiety, and her depression 8/10 on a scale of 0-10, with 10 being the worst depression. She denies any SI/HI but wishes to turn things around, stating ‘I blame myself for his death”. Currently, the patient reports difficulty initiating sleep, low mood, poor motivation, lack of pleasure in the things she once used to enjoy, and poor appetite.
Plan: Encourage and promote sleep hygiene, such as the use of cellphones or tablets 2 hours before going to bed, cutting down on caffeinated drinks, continuing supportive therapy, starting Desyrel 50 mg po at bedtime for insomnia, Vistaril 50mg po at bedtime PRN for anxiety and insomnia, continue bupropion 300 mg po daily, lorazepam 0.5 mg po BID PRN and Vyvanse 70 mg po Q am. F/U visit in 6 weeks.

Since 1963, a series of United States Supreme Court case decisions have clarified that in criminal
cases, prosecutors must disclose to the defense evidence favorable to the defendant. This
includes information that may be used to impeach the credibility of government witnesses,
including law enforcement officers. These decisions mean that police officers who have
documented histories of lying-in official matters are liabilities to their agencies, and these
histories may render them unable to testify credibly.
