In his after-school program, Justin loves to paint and creates some beautiful watercolor paintings that his caregiver dis-plays on the bulletin board. Body:

Causes of Justin’s Lack of Confidence:
a. Comparison with older siblings: Justin’s desire to emulate his older, athletic siblings puts him under pressure to meet their standards. The physical disparities between them may contribute to feelings of inadequacy.
b. Racial and cultural differences: As an adopted Vietnamese boy in a Caucasian family, Justin may experience a sense of being different, which can impact his self-esteem and confidence.
c. Negative experiences during team activities: Being the last one chosen and facing ridicule when he falls short in baseball negatively impacts Justin’s self-image, leading to a lack of confidence.

Support from Caregiver:
a. Recognize and celebrate individual strengths: Justin’s caregiver can create a positive environment by displaying his watercolor paintings on the bulletin board, emphasizing his artistic talent and fostering a sense of achievement.
b. Encourage open communication: Actively listening to Justin’s concerns allows the caregiver to address his anxieties, providing reassurance and guidance.
c. Offer opportunities for success: The caregiver can identify alternative activities where Justin excels, such as joining an art club or exploring other sports that align with his interests and abilities.

Support from Family:
a. Foster a sense of belonging: Justin’s family can instill a strong sense of identity by embracing and celebrating their multicultural background. This can help him develop pride in his heritage and overcome any feelings of being different.
b. Encourage sibling support: The older siblings can play a vital role in boosting Justin’s confidence by involving him in their sports activities, providing guidance, and offering encouragement.
c. Promote inclusivity at home: Engaging in family activities that emphasize cooperation, collaboration, and shared goals can help Justin feel valued and included.

Group Games to Foster Teamwork:
a. Relay races: Organize relay races where teamwork is essential to achieve success. Encourage communication and cooperation among team members to complete the race successfully.
b. Cooperative ball games: Games like “Hot Potato” or “Pass the Ball” require players to work together to keep the game going, promoting teamwork and collaboration.
c. Team-building exercises: Activities like building puzzles or constructing structures together encourage communication, problem-solving, and cooperation.

Conclusion:
By understanding the causes behind Justin’s lack of confidence and implementing strategies to address them, both his caregiver and family can create an environment that nurtures his self-esteem. Through inclusive group games that emphasize teamwork, Justin can develop a sense of belonging, ultimately helping him feel valued as a part of the team. With ongoing support and encouragement, Justin will be empowered to embrace his unique strengths, fostering his personal growth and self-confidence.
