Applied Organizational Leadership
Case Study Memo 5
Barefoot College of Tilonia
I chose the Barefoot College case as an illustration of a successful social movement. The author of the “Leading Change: Leadership, Organization, and Social Movements” argues there are four critical leadership practices for leading successful social movements. Let’s consider each one in turn.
1. Building Relationships. How does Barefoot College build relationships with “students” or local, uneducated workers? How does Barefoot College build relationships across gender, race, and class? How does Barefoot College recruit and train other leaders so that the social movement can continue to grow and scale?
2. Telling the Story. What story is Barefoot College telling? What’s the plot? Who are the characters? What is the moral of the story?
3. Devising Strategy. How does Barefoot College overcome resource challenges?
4. Catalyzing Action. How does Barefoot College craft meaningful work to catalyze action?
