Assessing Your Raw Materials: Unveiling Your Personal Brand

As explained in the reading “Start the Marketing Yourself Process by Assessing Your Raw
Materials,” a thorough assessment of your personal raw materials will be necessary for you to
begin the marketing yourself process.
Step 1
For this assignment, you will need to conduct an evaluation of your own personal raw
materials with respect to the following six categories (each of which was explained in the
assigned reading and videos):
1. Strengths (or what you’re already good at)
2. Potential Strengths (or what you think you could possibly be good at with
practice)
3. Faults or Bad Habits
4. Interests, Desires, Passions (or what motivates you)
5. Your “Personality”
6. Core Values (or what’s important to you)
Step 2
After conducting your self-assessment, write up your results using the following guide:
1. Cover Page
Name, Panther ID, Major, Minor, Certificate(s), Assignment Title
2. Introduction
Discuss the purpose for your raw materials self-assessment.
3. Raw Materials
For each of the six categories, please explain the following:
a. How did you conduct your self-assessment for that particular raw materials
category? Use at least one online assessment for the Strengths category and
at least one online assessment for the Personality category. You may use
other online assessments for other categories if you wish. For all categories,
you should seek the feedback of your family, friends, co-workers, supervisors,
and/or employees, etc. in order to gain knowledge from a different
perspective. Explain why you used the various assessments and/or sources
that you used.
b. What are your resulting findings? In other words, what are yourstrengths?
…your potential strengths? …your faults or bad habits? Etc. Be sure to
describe each trait or aspect (just listing a few adjectives is not “A” or “B”
work). Be specific and detailed in describing your findings.
c. What insights about yourself did you learn from the self-assessment for each
raw materials category? What was expected and what was unexpected?
Why? How did you feel about the insights of the other people you consulted?
Are you coming across as having different raw materials than you think you
possess? Are you portraying your raw materials as you desire? Also, what do
you think about any discrepancies between the feedback that you received
from other people and from the online tools?
You should have at least one paragraph for each of these three parts above (a-c)
for each one of the six categories.
4. Summary & Synthesis
(a) Provide an overall summary of your raw materials and then
(b) (this is very important) synthesize the results for all the categories.
Consider the balance between the positives and the negatives. Consider how certain
traits or attributes might complement or might compete with others. Consider
whether certain traits (either initially seen as positive or negative) might coincide
with or perhaps might conflict with your discovery of your core values. Speculate on
how the synergies or lack of synergies between raw materials categories might help
and/or hurt your abilities to develop your personal/professional brand and market
yourself. This synthesis and summary section is a critical element in tying all of your
assessment work together, and will help you drive your “marketing yourself” plans as
you move forward. Be sure to put significant effort into this section.

Title: Assessing Your Raw Materials: Unveiling Your Personal Brand

Introduction:
The purpose of conducting a thorough assessment of your personal raw materials is to lay the foundation for the marketing yourself process. By understanding your strengths, potential strengths, faults or bad habits, interests, personality, and core values, you can develop a strong personal brand and effectively market yourself. This essay will guide you through the process of conducting a self-assessment in each of these categories, providing insights and recommendations for leveraging your raw materials.

Raw Materials:

Strengths:
To assess your strengths, it is recommended to use online assessments such as StrengthsFinder or VIA Character Strengths. These assessments provide a comprehensive understanding of your unique capabilities. Additionally, seek feedback from others who have observed your strengths in action. This will provide a broader perspective.

The resulting findings from the self-assessment for strengths will highlight your unique talents and skills. It is essential to provide specific examples and descriptions rather than simply listing adjectives. For instance, you may discover that you excel in problem-solving, communication, or leadership.

Insights gained from this assessment can help you understand your natural abilities and how they can be leveraged to achieve personal and professional success. It is crucial to compare your self-perception with the feedback received from others. Any discrepancies should be analyzed to identify areas where you may be underestimating or overestimating your strengths.

Potential Strengths:
Identifying potential strengths requires introspection and self-reflection. Consider areas where you have shown interest or have a natural inclination but may not have fully explored or developed. For example, you may have an interest in graphic design but have never pursued it professionally.

Exploring potential strengths allows you to uncover hidden talents and passions that can be further developed with practice and dedication. Assessments like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) or the Holland Code can provide insights into areas where you might excel with further exploration.

Faults or Bad Habits:
Assessing faults or bad habits requires honesty and self-awareness. Reflect on areas where you struggle or exhibit behaviors that hinder your personal or professional growth. Seek feedback from trusted individuals who can provide constructive criticism.

The findings from this assessment will help you identify areas for improvement and personal development. By acknowledging and addressing these faults or bad habits, you can work towards becoming a more well-rounded individual.

Interests, Desires, Passions:
Assessing your interests, desires, and passions requires introspection and self-reflection. Consider what motivates and energizes you, both personally and professionally. Think about activities or subjects that you are naturally drawn to and feel passionate about.

By identifying your interests, desires, and passions, you can align your personal and professional goals with activities that bring fulfillment and satisfaction. This alignment will contribute to a sense of purpose and drive in marketing yourself effectively.

Your “Personality”:
To assess your personality, it is recommended to use validated online assessments such as the Big Five personality traits or the DISC profile. These assessments provide insights into your behavioral tendencies, communication style, and interpersonal preferences.

Understanding your personality will help you navigate social interactions and work effectively with others. It will also allow you to leverage your unique traits in marketing yourself authentically.

Core Values:
Assessing your core values requires reflection on what is truly important to you in life. Consider your deeply held beliefs, principles, and ethical standards. Reflect on what guides your decision-making process.

Identifying your core values will help you align your personal brand with organizations or opportunities that share similar values. It will also provide a foundation for making choices that align with your authentic self.

Summary & Synthesis:
In summary, conducting a thorough assessment of your personal raw materials is crucial for developing a strong personal brand and marketing yourself effectively. By leveraging your strengths, exploring potential strengths, addressing faults or bad habits, aligning with your interests and passions, understanding your personality, and identifying core values, you can create a well-rounded personal brand.

The synthesis of these raw materials is essential for understanding how they interact and complement each other. Consider how certain traits may enhance or compete with others and how they align with your core values. By identifying synergies between raw materials categories, you can harness their collective power to develop your personal/professional brand successfully.

In conclusion, by conducting an in-depth assessment of your raw materials and synthesizing the findings, you can develop a comprehensive understanding of yourself. This self-awareness will empower you to market yourself confidently while staying true to your authentic self.
