Write about four self-portraits: Albrecht Dürer’s Self-Portrait of 1500 and three additional portraits that you select. Choose one self-portrait from each of the following lessons: Lesson 6, Lesson 7, and Lesson 8.
One of the running themes of the second half of the course is how artists use their art to construct and express their identities. Consider Albrecht Dürer’s Self-Portrait of 1500, as well as three other self-portraits, and analyze how each artist chose to represent themselves in their self-portraits. Make sure to explore how each work is representative of that artist’s interests, style, and time/place, showing how these works communicate the identities of these artists. Consider how each artwork connects to issues of art and art production in the context for which it was made.
