The Changing Perspective on the Role of Policy
Before beginning this course, my perspective on the role of policy was limited and somewhat naive. I saw policy as a set of rules and regulations implemented by the government to maintain order and ensure the smooth functioning of society. I understood that policy could impact various aspects of our lives, but I did not fully comprehend the extent of its influence on communities and individuals.
However, throughout this course, my perspective on the role of policy has undergone a significant transformation. I have come to realize that policy is not just a set of rules; it is a powerful tool that can shape the lives of individuals, communities, and even entire nations. Policy decisions have far-reaching consequences, and they can either perpetuate inequality and injustice or promote social justice and well-being.
One area that has particularly influenced my changing perspective is Chapter 11 of DiNitto and Johnson’s book, which discusses the challenges faced by gender and sexual orientation in a diverse society. This chapter shed light on how policies can either support or undermine the rights and well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals. It made me realize that policies can be discriminatory and heterosexist, reinforcing social inequalities and marginalizing certain communities.
This newfound understanding has allowed me to see the effects of policy on my community differently. I now recognize that policy decisions can directly impact the lives of individuals within my community, especially those who belong to marginalized groups. Policies related to healthcare, education, employment, and social welfare can either promote inclusivity and equal opportunities or perpetuate systemic barriers and discrimination.
Moreover, this course has also broadened my perspective on communities in need. I now understand that there are various communities facing different types of challenges. Some communities face poverty, lack of access to healthcare, or inadequate housing, while others face discrimination and social exclusion due to factors such as race, ethnicity, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
When it comes to communities in need, my perspective on how policy affects them has deepened. I now realize that policy decisions can either exacerbate existing inequalities or address them effectively. Policies that provide targeted support and resources to marginalized communities can help uplift them and level the playing field. On the other hand, policies that ignore or neglect the needs of these communities can perpetuate cycles of poverty and marginalization.
However, it is also important to note that policy can affect communities with less need differently. While these communities may not face the same level of immediate challenges as marginalized communities, policy decisions can still impact their well-being. Policies related to economic development, environmental protection, and infrastructure can shape the overall quality of life for these communities.
In conclusion, this course has transformed my perspective on the role of policy. I now recognize policy as a powerful force that can influence the lives of individuals and communities in profound ways. It can either perpetuate inequalities or promote social justice and well-being. Understanding the effects of policy on different communities, including those in need and those with less need, has deepened my awareness of the importance of advocating for inclusive and equitable policies for a better society overall.
