Read the scenario below and then answer the following set of questions. Remember that as an evidence based practitioner you will give your patient answers based on the combination of: 1. best available evidence (research literature), 2. clinical expertise, and 3. the patient’s values and circumstances. This will enhance your quality of care and increase your credibility with your patient. EBP will also enhance your effectiveness in working with your colleagues, others who support healthcare (insurance companies, etc.), and officials who create healthcare related policies. Question one has already been answered.
Scenario:
Allison is a 27 year old resident physician who is an elite cyclist who was involved in a motor vehicle accident during which she sustained a TBI (traumatic brain injury), a fracture of her right femur, and jaw fracture. She has undergone multiple surgeries. Her communication is limited due to her jaw being wired shut which also limits solid food intake. She is currently 80% weight bearing on her right leg, with some balance challenges. She has general fatigue and muscle weakness. She has very little memory of the accident but does remember life prior to the accident. Her goal is to return to the hospital to finish out her residency in pediatrics.
