The source analysis papers in this course will prompt you to assess, evaluate, and cite primary (and secondary) historical sources with the mind-set of a
historian. The papers require a comparatively deep evaluation and a thorough interpretation of sources. You are expected to perform meticulous research,
provide a detailed and comprehensive analysis, and convincingly propose an effective argument.
Read the documents listed below—one from the Greek historian Thucydides (about Athens) and the other from scholar-warrior Xenophon (regarding Sparta).

What do these sources say about the virtues each city has chosen to cultivate as it builds its society and prepares for war? What strengths and weaknesses
are described in the texts? What strengths and weaknesses do you think might be present but are unstated? Which approach do you find preferable, and
why?
This source analysis paper should follow these guidelines: two to three pages, double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins.
Citations should be in Chicago style.
