Journal entry will consist of either a photo or brief video image and an explanation of how the particular photo/video recording demonstrates the way in which the law either promotes or inhibits the inclusion of persons with disabilities within society. (BASED IN CANADIAN SOCIETY/LAW only)
The explanation must be linked to the arguments advanced by one of the articles provided. As such, the explanation must include a brief summary of the article being referred to.
Assessment The Journal Entry will be assessed with the following criteria/questions in mind (out of 10 marks):
1) Effectiveness of the Image/Audio File/Video (2 marks) – how effective is the image/audio file/or video in communicating a relationship between law, disability and society? Does the image/audio file or video ‘speak for itself’ or is the message only perceived after the explanation?
2) Identification of the legal rules or frameworks that apply in the context of the image/audio file/video chosen (2 marks) – Has the student correctly identified the legal rules or framework that apply to the scenario identified in the image/audio file or video? Is there sufficient detail provided in order to justify how the legal rules or frameworks apply?
3) Summary of the article that is being discussed in the explanation (2 marks) – Has the student provided an effective summary of the article discussed in the explanation. Has the student correctly identified the main arguments advanced by the author?
4) Justification (2 marks) – has the student provided a convincing justification for how and why law serves to prohibit or encourage inclusion of persons with disabilities in the scenario depicted in the image/audio file or video? Has the student articulated a convincing link between the legal framework, the article chosen and the scenario depicted in the image/audio file or video? 2 marks allocated to writing style, grammar, structure and citation. All citation should follow the rules of the Canadian Guide to Uniform Legal Citation (McGill Guide).
