GEOINT data processing and exploitation is conducted via costly commercial software and high-end hardware requirements that drive costs further.
Traditionally, the government separates data processing activities: vector data is processed by GI&S professionals and raster data is processed by GEOINT
professionals. As this course focuses on the Intelligence aspects of GEOINT, this task will focus on the software and hardware requirements associated with
advanced raster processing.
Objectives:
The objective of this research and writing assignment is to familiarize you with GEOINT software and hardware requirements that support Intelligence
activities at the speed of military and law enforcement operations.
Evaluation:
You will research GEOINT Software systems (electronic light tables (ELT)) using one of the ELTs presented in class. You may choose an ELT not presented in
class but are required to coordinate with the professor for approval prior to starting on the assignment. You will research the software and vendor’s history
providing context on the vendor’s expertise as well as the technical maturation of the software. You will explain the software system and identify if it is part
of a larger offering of GEOINT software systems and why they are offered as separate systems from the vendor. You will determine which types of GEOINT
data are processed by the software and which are not while determining if the system is sensor agnostic. You will determine the hardware requirements
necessary to operate the software on CPUs, servers, or as-a-service (cloud) and analyze these requirements from a cost benefit perspective. Key and unique
software capabilities must be included. An overall analysis of the software should be conducted including advantages and limitations, integration of new
customer requirements, system pedigree, etc.
