Essay #1 Reconstruction of Labor. Drawing especially on Jones’ Goddess of Anarchy, assess whether and in what ways Reconstruction transformed labor relations and labor movements. Was there a Reconstruction of labor? You may utilize other readings, but make sure you bring in specific questions from Jones.
Essay # 2 To explain the disappointments of Reconstruction, judge and novelist Albion
Tourgee wrote the South “surrendered at Appomattox and the North has been
surrendering ever since.” Do you agree with that statement? Should we think of
Reconstruction as a defeat or retreat? And, if so, is the key cause the North’s surrender?
Each essay should be 4-5 paragraphs. You should bring in specific examples, and refer
to each of the four books (Foner, Dudden, Smith, Jones) at least once. (Foner, Dudden
and Jones can appear in either essay 1 or 2; Jones must appear in essay 1.)
