Song of Solomon Perfect Paragraph Due by June 8th at 11:00pm You’ve spent the last few weeks immersed in the major themes and ideas in Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon. Our daily aims/central questions have included: How does the author develop symbols into motifs in order to communicate thematic ideas? Your task is to choose one of these Aims and use Morrison’s text and our class discussions to write a single, perfect, fully-developed analytical paragraph in response to it. To that end: Craft an assertion that introduces and frames the paragraph that will follow, giving your reader a clear sense of what the intellectual and literary focus of the paragraph will be. Your job is to articulate and explore one intelligent idea about one aspect of Song of Solomon. Use strong and thorough evidence (1-2 pieces of aligned evidence) from the text to support your analysis, conducting a close reading of two or three of the most relevant passages. First, you will introduce each passage, briefly explaining its context, then you will quote the passage. Finally, you will interpret the text and clearly reconnect your ideas to the topic sentence – do not simply summarize. Be sure that the passages you include address and support your main idea. In your analysis, be sure to identify at least one literary element or rhetorical device and analyze how Morrison’s use of it develops this central idea. Examples include: conflict, characterization, connotation, metaphor, simile, irony, point-of-view, setting, structure, symbolism, tone, etc. Finally, be sure to organize your ideas in a cohesive and coherent manner, maintain a formal style of writing, and follow the conventions of standard written English. Remember to focus on the clarity and simplicity of your writing at the sentence level. Make sure every sentence – every word – is doing useful and important work. Cut any word, phrase, or sentence that isn’t. Additional pointers: Use active, not passive voice. Write about literature in the present tense: “Milkman searches” rather than “Milkman searched.” Avoid using page numbers in the body of your writing. No: “On page 151, Morrison describes Ruth as ‘dying of lovelessness.’” Yes: “Morrison describes Ruth as ‘dying of lovelessness’ (151)” Avoid writing that Toni Morrison is “trying to say” something.
