Detail your Justice’s nomination and confirmation to the Supreme Court, including the political circumstances surrounding the vacancy (who they replaced, and the implications for the balance of the Court), the major issues raised at their nomination hearings, and final Senate vote on confirmation. Was their nomination and confirmation typical of other Supreme Court nominees, or in some way unusual? Based on the evidence from the readings, and any other sources you wish to draw from, what do you believe the appropriate role of the Senate should be in Supreme Court nominations? Should they simply attempt to determine if a nominee is qualified, or should Senators vote based upon a nominee’s views and the likely effect they will have on the balance of the Court? (Due Sunday 7/17 at 11:59pm). You must write at least 2 pages, double spaced, Times New Roman or simlar font. You must include a separate title page, and a separate list of references at the end (neither of these counts towards the page requirement – you must have at least two full pages of actual text).
You must consult at least two sources outside of the textbooks (Wikipedia does not count as a source!). Any references used must be properly cited (see http://libguides.unf.edu/citationguide for guides to different citation styles. You may use any style, provided you remain consistent throughout your assignment. Sources used must be cited both within the body of your paper where they have been consulted, including page numbers if the source is a book, and in the list of references at the end of the paper).
