1. Briefly summarize Lilly Ledbetter’s experience with workplace discrimination.

In 1979, Lilly Ledbetter began working at the Goodyear tire plant in Gadsden, Alabama. She found out, after working for the company for 20 years, that she had been receiving less pay than men. Being a supervisor, she was paid much less than other male counterparts, and even some of those who ranked below her.

2. Why is this story relevant to a course on business law?

The story is relevant to a course on business law because it is against the law for businesses to discriminate against employees on the basis of their sex. Such prohibition is outlined under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Specifically, Title VII prohibits employers with more than fifteen employees to discriminate employees based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin.

It is important for business students to know that in workplace, it is against the law to discriminate someone when they are recruiting new employees or interacting with other co-workers. Students should also know the rights not to be discriminated against.

3. Today, is equal pay for equal work a reality in the United States?

I would say that equal pay for equal work is a reality in the United States. However, I am sure there are still cases across the country where you will hear inequality of pay at work.

I think it is already a reality because it is in our law in the Civil Rights Act, that it is illegal to discriminate against someone on the basis of their race, color, religion, sex, and national origin. The Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act allows equal-pay lawsuit to have the 180-day filing deadline extended to the latest paycheck. Nowadays, wherever there is injustice in related to equal-pay, it can be resolved by our legal system.

4. What other forms of discrimination occur in the workplace? Give at least one specific example from a news report or other quotable source.

Discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex and national origin exists in workplace. Also exists is pregnancy discrimination. Employers may refuse to hire a woman because she is pregnant or is considering becoming pregnant. The Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 addresses such issues. It amended Title VII to make it illegal to discriminate on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions. A female worker who becomes pregnant is entitled to work as long as she can perform her tasks, and her job must be held open for her while she is on maternity leave.

In the case Peggy Young vs UPS, Young took on a part-time role with UPS as a truck driver, picking up air shipments. Four years later, she took a leave of absence to receive in vitro fertilization. When she became pregnant and a midwife instructed her not to lift packages over 20 pounds, Young asked to return to UPS to do either light duty or her regular job as a truck driver, which seldom required her to lift heavy boxes. Her manager told her that UPS offered light duty to workers who sustained on-the-job injuries, employees with ailments covered by the Americans With Disabilities Act, and those who had lost Department of Transportation certification because of physical ailments; not—the manager said—to pregnant workers.

Young won the case in March 2015. The court ruled that Young had the right to sue UPS for pregnancy discrimination. The court did not issue a rigid rule that will dictate when an employer must make accommodations for a pregnant worker. Instead, Justice Breyer left a bit of wiggle room. He wrote, in essence, that if an employer is going to not accommodate a pregnant woman while accommodating other employees “similar in their ability or inability to work,” the employer must have a “legitimate, non-discriminatory reason” for doing so.

Create a two-part title. Begin with a two-part title (see the Formatting Checklist section on titles for instructions on this). Since this is a personal reflection paper, use the word “My” or “Me” or “I” in the title.
Form a four-step introduction paragraph. Follow the title with a four-step introductory paragraph (see the Formatting Checklist for instructions on this). Note that this is ONE paragraph with four steps in it:
1. Attention step: The paragraph must start with a short description of a moment in your life related to writing. This anecdote may be as short as three sentences, but don’t let it run more than six sentences in length. Perhaps describe something you once wrote in a school setting, whether recently or years ago in school as a child. Use the word “I” in writing this opening anecdote.
2. Topic-orientation step: The next sentence after attention step above (the example) is the topic-orientation step/sentence. Since the assignment is about writing formal essays, say something here in one sentence about that. As an example, it might read something like this: This experience I had in fifth grade with writing left me with a good taste for formal essay writing.
3. Thesis statement: The next sentence is the thesis statement, and in this course I want it to always be the third step in your introduction paragraph and italicized (please don’t forget to italicize it!). Make it a simple and clear assertion. For example, it might be a statement like this: Writing has always been an easy skill for me, so when I began to write formal research papers in high school and now in college, I found it an easy process. Of course, if you have found the experience not an easy process, say that. This is just an example.
4. Preview step: The last sentence of your intro paragraph is called the preview step. It needs to be clear to the reader that you are giving them a “table of contents,” so to speak, of the main sections of your paper. Don’t use the word “will” in it; it should be written in the present tense. For example, it might read like this: In the first part of this essay, I review my childhood writing experiences, then the draconian writing teacher I had in high school, and finally the twenty years that have passed since when I have written no formal essays. In the second part of the paper I describe my experience with Microsoft Word, my experience using MLA formatting style, and my experience using documentation in research papers.
If you complete the steps above, you will have a single, well-rounded introduction paragraph. (Did you make each step its own paragraph? If so, you will lose points. It is to be four steps in ONE paragraph).
Write the body of your essay. After the introduction pargraph, craft the paragraphs of the main part of your essay. The paper should be written in paragraphs that have clear topic sentences. The first line of each paragraph should be indented (tabbed, not spaced) 1/2 inch. A paragraph should generally be between four and eight sentences in length.
In the first half of the body of your essay (after the introduction paragraph), describe your personal history and experience with formal writing. It should run two or three paragraphs in length.
In the second half of the body of your essay, describe and reflect on your level of experience and knowledge about exactly the following four areas of writing. It can be one longer paragraph (form the topic sentence so it covers all four topics), or each point below could form its own paragraph if each paragraph is at least four sentences long:
1. Your experience using online article databases (like EbscoHost) versus just googling to find information.
2. Your experience incorporating outside sources and quotes and then forming bibliographies (called Works Cited in MLA) of those sources at the end of your papers.
3. Your experience using a style manual like MLA (and other editorial formatting guides like APA) in papers you have written.
4. Your experience using in-text parenthetical citations to document your sources.
Start each paragraph with a topic sentence. Except for the first introduction paragraph of the paper, be sure to write in paragraphs with clear opening topic sentences that introduce what the main idea of the paragraph is about.

Edinburgh Trams is a tramway in Edinburgh, Scotland, operated by Transport for Edinburgh. It is
a 14-kilometre (8.7 mi) line between York Place in New Town and Edinburgh Airport, with 15
stops.
Construction began in June 2008, but after encountering a number of delays it did not open until
31 May 2014. The scheme had an initial estimated cost of £375 million in 2003, but by May 2008,
when contracts were signed, the cost had risen to £521 million. After extra interest payments are

Introduction
Australia continues to experience high levels of diet-related conditions and diseases. For example, 63.4% of Australians aged 18 years and over were overweight or obese (11.2 million people) in 2014-15 (Australian Bureau of Statistics 2015). The health problems associated with poor diet occur as a result of excessive intake of foods that are deemed high in energy, saturated fat, added sugars and/or added salt but relatively low in nutrients (National Health Medical Research Council 2015). When consumed regularly, these foods can promote weight gain, high blood pressure and cholesterol, thus increasing the risk of disease.
When it comes to ‘healthy’ eating, however, many people believe that consuming a healthy diet is expensive and costs much more than purchasing junk food (Lee 2016). As health and health-related practitioners, we are interested in basing our practice (including clinical practice, as well as assisting governments to develop appropriate public policies and programs) on evidence. Therefore, this assignment requires you to access and understand health-related data from reputable, widely-used (by health professionals) sources of information in order to establish whether ‘healthy’ eating is indeed influenced by cost and one’s socio-economic status. If so, it is important that we understand ways that this can be addressed effectively in order to improve eating habits and reduce the risk of diet-related diseases.
