Virtue ethics focuses on the character and moral virtues of individuals

Martha is the administrative assistant to Valerie, the practice manager in a five-physician practice. Salaries of staff are confidential. Since payroll is handled by an outside company, only the practice manager has knowledge of who makes what salary. Valerie has gone to lunch and left her door open. Several people have been in and out of Valerie’s office dropping off reports or other information.

Martha goes in the office to place a report on Valerie’s desk and notices that a budget worksheet listing all staff salaries is in clear view. It would be easy to take a quick look, especially since Martha believes she is paid less than other employees with fewer responsibilities. Martha backs out of the office and locks Valerie’s door without looking at the sheet. She thinks to herself, If I should not know what everyone else is being paid, then no one else should either.

Curtis is one of the employees who had left information on Valerie’s desk before Martha closed the door. He also sees the budget sheet but does not stop to look at it. It did not occur to him to look at it, although it would have been great to know that he was being paid more than other employees. He puts his file down on Valerie’s desk and thinks to himself, I will warn Valerie that she needs to be more careful about what she leaves on her desk for anyone to see.

According to virtue ethics, who is more ethical – Martha, the one tempted to look, but doesn’t, or Curtis, who isn’t even tempted to look? Defend your answer.

The Impact of Creative Expression on Culture and Society

Overview
For this assignment, which supports your final project, remember that you are assuming the role of a researcher of human cultures, an anthropologist who is looking from the future back into our world today.
In your final project you will analyze a work of human creative expression, describe it, describe its purpose, and assess how creative expression impacts and is impacted by surrounding situations. You will also pose questions about the relationship between culture and expression as well as how values shape and are shaped by expression, and determine how you would go about answering them.
In this assignment you will practice asking the questions and determining how to go about answering them.

1. Thinking of the work selected, explore how acts of creative expression impact, and are impacted by, the people and situations surrounding them.
2. State questions about the relationship between culture and expression.

Driving Lessons

watch the movie Driving Lessons. It was released in 2006 and is PG-13. It stars Rupert Grint, Julie Walters, and Laura Linney. It is described as “A coming of age story about a shy teenage boy trying to escape from the influence of his domineering mother. His world changes when he begins to work for a retired actress.” This can be found on Netflix sometimes – you know how they rotate their availability. But you can definitely rent it on Amazon. And there is a DVD copy available in the FGC library for borrowing but don’t count on this as a sure thing because someone else might have it rented.
As you watch the movie, take some notes on things that relate to what we learned in this course. So for example, you might want to note the type of parenting style of Ben’s parents. Or maybe take notes on how Evie is adjusting to her age and career. Etc etc. Your essay should reflect that you can understand and synthesize the information we learned in the course and how it ties into the aspects of the characters. Your critical thinking skills will come into play here so be sure and show them off.
In the 1300 – 1700 word essay, you are not giving me a review of the movie. What you will do is compare 3 things in the movie to things we read about in the textbook. You need to be sure to identify the items clearly (hint: use headers in the essay). Additionally, you need 2 or more scholarly resources to support what you are saying. So if you, for instance, choose to discuss the parenting style used by Laura, you can use the book as a reference but maybe you found an additional source to help add more information/support to your claim. You will be using APA 7 formatting.
