According to the historian Benjamin Braude, an earlier generation of Ottoman historians misunderstood what the “millet system” was about. How did they misunderstand it? How, then, does Braude understand the term “millet”? What implications does his new explanation of “millet” have for how we understand the Ottoman Empire?

The New Deal and Its Impact on Marginalized Groups During the Great Depression

Roosevelt called his program to reform the nation’s economy during the Great Depression the New Deal. Not only did it bring about major reforms, and introduce tougher regulation of big business, it also set a precedent for greatly expanded federal government involvement in the economy and society. Some of the programs that were initiated had a lasting impact while others were struck down by the Supreme Court. Factors Contributing to the Success of the Civil Rights Movement

Throughout the 1950s African Americans in northern cities grew increasingly active in opposing discrimination and in protesting white resistance to black progress in housing, education, and employment. Martin Luther King and others embarked on a campaign of nonviolent resistance and demonstrations, which spread to the south. Some of the leadership in the Deep South responded with brutal force, taking a militant stand against change, and in defiance of federal legislation to grant African Americans their civil rights.

Identify and list some of the factors that contributed to the success of the Civil Rights movement. Choose one, and discuss its significance to the movement, and explain why you made this particular choice.
